hi everyone,
my dermatologist wants me to do a 6-month course of antibiotics for a skin condition. she's prescribed 40mg/day of doxycycline. she seemed very confident that this dosage level will not affect my IBS symptoms.
has anyone had experience with this? just want to proceed cautiously...
thanks, chris

Doxycycline is sometimes used to treat post-infection IBS. However, it is usually given in higher doses. A Google search on doxycycline and IBS yields a few comments about it making their IBS worse but these individuals were taking much higher doses. You will likely have to try it in order to determine if it might be a problem for you.

If you're concerned, I would highly recommend taking a probiotic as well. Take them at least two hours apart, and you should be completely fine. I never take antibiotics now without a probiotic. Bio-K is my favorite; it's a soy yogurt that works REALLY well! You could also just try eating soy yogurt once a day and see if that helps before jumping to the probiotic. Good luck!

Ditto the comment on taking probiotics along with your treatment. Antibiotics can cause health problems down the road, even long after you stop taking them.

This is exactly what i fear caused my IBS, long term use of antibiotics for my acne that my jerk of a dermatologist prescribed. Whats funny is once i started taking pro-biotics for my IBS my acne dissapeared! It may also be the alfalfa supplements i take but im pretty sure its the pro-biotics that are doing it. I haven't seen my dermatologist in a year and i am so happy for that, unfortunetly the pro-biotics don't do anything for my IBS.
