Hello. I know that this topic must have been talked about in the past, however, it is the first time I am thinking about it w/my own long time battle w/IBS. In an effort to shed a few pounds ( and general feeling of bloat) prior to a cruise, I have been eating fruit, cottage cheese, pretzels, soups, and little carbs in the form of breads. Now I know that this is the complete opposite of what I usually try to stick to w/Heather's Diet. I am off work for the summer (teacher) and have access to the toilet.

Being unaware of the pseudo- SCD I have been on for the past week, I have been shocked that although the D (urgency and loose) is still there, I am not in pain and/or cramping up.

Please, Please can anyone speak to their experiences w/the SCD and why on Heather's diet we are encouraged to eat bread, rice, and pasta when the SCD discourages that due to the complex-carbs and sugars? I am in no way wanting to start trouble here, I am really interested in the the reasoning behind the "bread" difference in the two approaches.

Thanks!

You might check out the article on the Chrohn's & Colitis Foundation web site.

The SCD diet prohibits many more foods than just complex carbs and sugars. It also restricts canned vegetables, all grains, some legumes, starchy tubers (potatoes, yams, and parsnips), seaweed and seaweed byproducts, canned and most processed meats, dairy products, canola oil, baking powder, commercial nut mixes, balsamic vinegar, and products containing FOS.

It is a difficult diet to follow.

You might try reading up on Elaine Gottschall. Her daughter suffered from Ulcerative Colitis, and she was able to heal her with this diet. Elaine was a very educated woman, who went back to school, to become a biochemist. I don't know much about the diet, but I do know that it has helped many. It would be tough to follow, but worth a try, I guess.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

Not eating carbs will be very difficult for me since I am a vegetarian. However, I have been sick for so long that I am willing to do (as Heather posted-thanks Sly for the suggestion) whatever I need to do to get better for myself. We are all different. I will not eat animals but I am open to trying new things.

My IBS didn't pop up one day last year, it's been a part of me for since I was 13 and I am now 39. Trust me, I just need to keep trying and the carbs thing seems to be the last thing left that I have not eliminated. Even if I can get 50% better and not feel panic and dread everyday, I will be happy.

Thanks Again.

robbiej- I have also tried a number of things to get my IBS under control. I have not actually tried the SCD, but another similar antifungal diet (a lot more food choices!) which eliminates all grains and higher sugar veggies and fruits for a period of time. It is the only thing that helped me get well again. I think part of the theory behind such diest is that it allow one to determine if there may be a food allergy to ones symptoms. As well, fungus can be a cause food allergies. Fungus permeates through the gut, allowing food leakage. By going on such diets (SCD/antifungal), you are starving the fungus as it requires high carbs to survive, and will die in the absence of sugar(carbs). Also, all grains, including corn, are commonly contaminated with fungal poisons, so you are eliminating another possible route of fungus coming into your body if you stop eating these. Bread is a grain and a fungus (yeast), both things which may over a period of time contribute to unwanted symptoms. For me, I do so much better when I eat little/no bread, as well as other yeasty foods.

I know nothing about the SCD but I want to mention that when the body starts a new eating plan it can initially feel great but it may not last --per my GI doctor. It is something to think about. I have noticed when people cut out carbs (remember SOLUBLE FIBER AND CARBS ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS EVERYONE!) for a short time they feel better but for the long term their pooping gets messed up.

--------------------
IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Thanks so much, Kim. The more I read and learn the more sense it is making to me. As with everything else in medicine and diet, it is all so personal. I'm going to keep on with this and hopefully, if not a complete recovery, it may be a small ray of sun shining through.

I can tell you this: I went to the mall the other day to get my rings cleaned, and it was the first time in YEARS that when my belly started grumbling I didn't panic.

Thanks again everyone.
