Can you have a wheat sensitivity without it being related to gluten?

Probably so. You probably can't handle the whole grain wheat, it is very hard to digest. How does your body react when you eat wheat?

Really, Kappy it is any wheat whether whole grain or not. I seem to be fine with other grains, even gluten grains, but wheat whether white bread or whole grain makes me feel bad a few hours after eating it. I feel spacey, tired, and just not with it. I am connecting it to the wheat. But is it the wheat or gluten? Can they be separated out from each other?

Recently the British Society of Gastroenterology published practical guidelines for managing IBS in which they reported the most common intolerances found in IBSers is dairy and wheat. The details of the intolerances are in the research paper given in the reference below. Also, individuals with fructose malabsorption and IBS have troubles with the fructans in wheat but don't have problems with other grains containing gluten. Also, a more recent study (the second reference below) found that looked at food antibodies and found wheat, beef, pork, lamb, and soya bean to be the most problematic foods for IBSers. Interestingly dairy is not on the list.

Thanks Syl, for this info. Now, my next question would be, when looking for wheat on ingredient labels, could it be disguised (as they are prone to do), as something besides wheat? What else should I be looking for on labels, to avoid wheat.
Thanks

I always thought wheat and gluten pretty much went hand in hand but I am new to all of this so I am still learning myself.

Gluten is found in barley and rye as well as wheat.
