Your doctor can request a breath test for fructose malabsorption and lactose intolerance and a blood test or endoscopy for gluten intolerance.

When I asked my gastro to test on the lacto breath test, she said to save my money, drink a glass of milk and see how it agrees with me. If I feel fine, I'm not lacto intolerant. Did anyone actualy take this breath test and have it prove positive? Should I find another gastro doc to get tested for the fruit and lacto, or is she right about eating the food and waiting for results? It makes me leary of results if the Doc's not impressed with the test, but maybe she's just skeptical. Do you think the lacto and dairy results would make a diff in the IBS diet anyways?

I dont think you GI doc is skeptical. The breath test is a standard clinical test. You can read about it here. However, it is not unusual for GI docs to tell patients to try drinking milk or eat fruits high in fructose and see how they react. The patient can usually tell within a few hours if the have problems with lactose or fructose.

the blood test for gluten is not good, but you can do a stool and saliva test that is suppose to be more accurate. I will be doing that test in a few days. I tested neg in the gluten blood test. i will let you know my results.

My husband did a blood test (came back negative), stool test (came back positive) and an endoscopy (came back negative). So we decided with such mixed results he doesn't have celiac but maybe just a gluten intolerance vice allergy. I did the blood test (came back negative) and the stool (came back positive). I never did the endoscopy.
