I'm new to the site and prior to me finding out i had ibs, my diet consisted of mainly fruits veggies and lean meats...i barely had complex carbs at all....so i am trying to get used to this lol, my question is i saw on the acceptable food list, squash was listed on there....do i still need to cook it or would i be able to shred my zucchini and yellow squash and eat it raw? Thanks for any help...

Hi! and Welcome to the site!!
First, are you IBS C or D?
If you are C, like me, then yes, eat your fruits, veggies, and lean meats. That is the bulk of my diet.
Squash and Zucchini are excellent! I have only eaten them raw on rare occasions, but if you try it, and it doesn't bother you then, yes. Eat up! It is trial and error on what one person can eat compared to what another person can eat. Everyone on here is different. I can handle 85% organic, all natural dark chocolate, but most people on here cannot.
You say that you barely had complex carbs at all. Do you mean you barely had simple carbs at all? Fruits and veggies are complex carbs.

Thank you! I love this site I am learning so much, I applied the basics and have been following it for roughly 4 days, but am already feeling better! I alternate between both C and D (hoping I get the lingo right here! lol) My biggest problem is bloating...I get such bad bloating that I look 3 months pregnant. I tried to eat blueberries raw and that caused bloating, when I had cooked them and ate them with brown rice I was fine...so I am thinking that I may need to cook the squash as well. I can seem to tolerate coffee as long as I buy the low acid coffee.
It was amazing to see how my stomach has dramatically gone down since I changed my eating, I look like I had lost 10 pounds! lol

oops sorry Kappy, as for the complex carbs confusion lol I very rarely had rice, potatoes (excpet for sweet potatoes which was rare), and I definately never ate bread. Although I did have oatmeal every single day (which even though it says on the guidelines that is an acceptable food....it seems to give me problems ) I ate very similar to a mediteranean diet (moderate to high healthy fats (nuts, nut butter, olive oil), freash fruits and vegetables, and lean meats...that was it.

I know exactly how you feel! I too look about 6 months pregnant when I get bloated. The C is not so bad anymore, just the bloating, pain, gas, nausea (sp?), etc.
Squash is a Soluble Fiber food, (you can TRY the squash raw) and berries are more Insoluble fiber, this is why you probably can't eat them raw. I usually eat my berries with a big bowl of oatmeal and 3T of Acacia fiber for a buffer. The berries provide just enough IF to keep me "going" if you know what I mean. If you can't handle them raw, try making oatmeal and about 3-4 minutes before it's done cooking, add the blueberries, and they will cook down some (raspberries really disentegrate when you cook them in the oatmeal and give it a great flavor!)
I think we eat about the same way. I enjoy the MUFAs that you mentioned (nuts, olive oil, nut butter, avocados, etc.) I also eat plenty of fresh fruits/veggies. I found that after I got semi- "stable" I could eat fruits/veggies alot more easily raw. I still have the occasional flare up, but it has not been so bad in the last couple of weeks. I have even been able to have a glass of my own homemade wine that my fiance and I made a while back. I have been letting it sit since I found out I had IBS and couldn't drink. It's soooooo good! (and very stout!!!) Only one glass, and I was through!! ahahaha I love wine!

LOL thanks you are great! I am so glad I found this site...I have learned so much already, did you ever notice that a "safe food" sometimes still caused you discomfort? I seem to be having a problem with the sourdough bread I got , I think I am just going to stick to rice, and rice flours....I made some awesome gluten free brownies last weekend and they gave me no probs .....Is turkey safe? Thanks again for all your help!!

Isn't it true!!! I told my friend, I think I'm the only one who prays for a BM and is so thankful, afterwards! LOL I had "D" for so many years, it's hard to get used to the "C" and then it goes to "D" w/ anxiety.... I think we all tolerate veggies cooked/steamed better than raw. Our tummies just don't seem to tolerate much raw stuff. Take care - Dorothy

Yeah, safe foods aren't always safe. It depends on what you have eaten before hand sometimes. I don't eat much bread except english muffins, so I don't know about the sourdough!
Brownies sound sooooo good right now! I'm trying to lose a little weight before my wedding in May, so no brownies for me!
Turkey is safe! I love turkey, its an excellent alternative to chicken, and I make my burgers, meatballs, spaghetti sauce, and a lot of things with the ground turkey meat! I think it's a lot better, and the fiance can't tell a difference!
