Well I have IBS-D and even though I do not have watery stool the number of bathroom trips I take and the urgency is considered diarrhea. At least that is what I have been told from my doctors. Without medicine I would go to the bathroom anywhere from 4-8 times a day with the feeling of urgency to where I didn't think I was going to make it some times. My stools are more soft and thin at times. Never really solid. If that makes sense. That is my main problem we are dealing with now is the urgency. I don't mind using the restroom a few times a day but I hate feeling like I'm not going to make it there. So how long have you had the urgency? What are you taking for it if anything?

Mrae,

The hypno tapes really help with the urgency issue. Mine is getter better and better...almost gone. You see, that was my biggest issue. I didn't mind going to the john often, but fear of not making it. The thing is, you can always find a restroom, even a cornfield if necessary, but the real problem is that overwhelming fear of soiling yourself. I know, been there, done that. I can't even begin to tell you the difference after working on my head. I also allow time in the AM to really sit there and be patient, sometimes 1/2 hour or longer...I do not rush anymore. Even if it means having to get up earlier. The cd's and this process have made a world of difference for me.

Normal stooling frequency: 3 per day, to 3 per week. Increased frequency may be diarrhea, or pseudodiarrhea. Diarrhea is defined either as watery stool, or increased frequency, or both, when compared to a normal amount. When diarrhea is not watery it is sometimes referred to as pseudodiarrhea or hyperdefication. Usually more than 3 bm's a day is considered to be diarrhea. Both diarrhea and pseudodiarrhea may occur in diarrhea predominate IBS suffers.

Interestingly, C also has many definitions and types. It can include hard stools, straining, infrequent bm's and minimum amounts.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
