Hello,

I am 26, male, and was diagnosed with IBS a month or so ago, though I was misdiagnosed with colitis and began taking Lialda before I received a 2nd opinion, which determined that I didn't have colitis or Crohn's. Though, the Lialda did seem to help.

So the doctor is assuming I have IBS. I have been diligent about keeping a food diary and I bought the IBS cookbook, but most foods affect my stomach. I stick to egg whites, chicken, fish, and certain steamed veggies. I'm also taking Align and just started taking Acacia fiber today. The Acacia is aggravating my stomach. Is this normal? How long should I give it before I give up and try another supplement? Most fiber causes me abdominal pain, and so I've been sticking to a low-fiber diet.

I don't know what type of IBS I have, but my major symptom is bad abdominal pain. I have diarrhea rarely, and constipation somewhat. Stress might cause some of my symptoms, but I think food is the major culprit.

I exercise nearly every day and try to keep my stress down. I've tried acupuncture and yoga and will try to do more of it. Do you think hypnotherapy would help, since it seems that food is the major culprit and not stress?

Thanks for your guidance! Giving up the foods I love hasn't been that difficult. But I find that so much of my time and thoughts are preoccupied with planning what I will eat and the pain that comes after most meals.

Best,
Scott

I started with 1/2 teaspoon. Now, I'm up to 1.5 teaspoons and I feel the best I ever had! How do I know when to stop increasing amounts?

Hi Scott,

When you are completely resolved you have reached your maintenance dose. Start to really pay attention to your bowel movements right now to ensure you are taking the correct amount.

Best!

Thanks, Erin.

But what does 'resolved' mean? I don't have D and rarely have C. For me, it's the lower left ab pain and cramping. Before the fiber, I could get pain even from eating according to the IBS diet. But now I don't have that problem. Does that mean I'm resolved? I get pain some times between my meals, and I suspect that's an anxiety thing. But the fiber can't resolve that, can it?

I guess I'm just confused as to knowing when I'm resolved or stabilized. I don't think it means I will get to a point of using enough fiber that I can go out and drink coffee, right?
