IBS Flare After Ovulation?

I'm sorry. I didn't know the appropriate place for this post. I apologize if this is wrong.

I'm lucky enough to have only mild IBS symptoms most of the time. I swing back and forth between never using the toilet and having a hard time making it to toilet in time, though the Tummy Fiber has largely fixed those problems for me. I would say that my IBS is now almost 100% tolerable. Except for one day a month.

Over the last 14 months, I gradually realized that what I think of as an IBS flare up is often associated with ovulation for me. First I feel bloated, then I get this "rumbly grumbly" thing in my gut, then I start to have pain....like a gassy kind of pain. Sometimes it's just "discomfort." But sometimes, like last cycle, it leaves me literally laying on my side on the bathroom floor, in major pain feeling like I'm either going to pass out or throw up or both. Once it starts to feel better, I've learned the hard way not to get up. Getting up...being anything other than horizontal...makes it worse and makes me shakier and more likely to pass out. It can take anywhere from 3-8 hours to resolve.

Because I've had a number of pre-ovulation ultrasounds lately, I now know it's a post-ovulation thing for me. It happens within hours of ovulation.

My OB/GYN said that maybe the fluid released during ovulation somehow irritates my bowel. Sounds like an interesting guess to me.

Again, I apologize for not knowing where to post these questions, but I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience and if anyone had any idea what might cause it. Any suggestions for where I might find more information on it? I'd like to understand it more...because then it's less scary...and also maybe if I understand it better I can figure out how to mitigate it a bit. I'm gonna do that ovulation thing again in a couple of weeks and I'm gun shy. It was B-A-D this last time!

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

It's a bummer that this was not answered a while back but I can say that after keeping a symptom and to lesser degree a food diary, I can see that around day 14, I get strong left side pains and IBS C symptoms for about 10-12 days. Then when most people have PMS, my IBS goes away. It's so frustrating to try and tease apart food causes, hormone causes, stress, sitting all day (that can't be good). Most likely it's a combination of all the above. Your pain seems quite extreme and don't you hate it when docs just take wild guesses. Nice. I would see if you need to be concerned about cysts or anything more serious.

I wish I could offer advice, but I can tell you that ovulation can the worst time of month for me as well. PMSing is bad, but sometimes ovulation is worse. When I was in a big IBS-D phase, my worst diarrhea attacks came every month when I was ovulating. Now, I get very nauseous and lose my appetite for days when I ovulate. You may have a hormonal imbalance or it may simply be that your IBS cannot take the hormonal changes. I wish I had a solution but have not found one for myself yet, unfortunately.
