I have IBS-D with Gerd. I was taking Nexium for the GERD until my insurance company will no longer pay for it(over $500. for a 3 month supply) Could someone suggest an alternative medication(over the counter) that would be similar to Nexium to take. I am on vacation and will be another month beforeI return home to see my Doctor.

There's something going on with Nexium (that it's no longer being covered by insurance). I had the same problem a few months back and I opted for Zantac (which is available over the counter). It comes in two strengths (75 and 150) and I've been using the 150. Works pretty good for me.

Zantac is a different class than Nexium. The closest you can get would be to try Prilosec(Omeprazole)most insurances cover this. Have you also looked into the Purple Plus Program. My insurance covers my Nexium as a 2nd tier but I have a purple plus card also from the drug company and it covers 6months of my copays, so I only pay half the year for it. If insurance doesn't cover it, it will pay $50 a month towards it for 6months and every year you can call and reload the card. go to purpleplusprogram.com I think

You can now buy Prilosec over the counter too - just may have to take a higher dosage than recommended. My BCBS still pays for my Nexium - I do it on the 90-day program so I actually get 90 pills for $28.00... OR - they did the last refill - we'll see what happens next time! Great advice about the purple pill card too! Good Luck!
