HI all!! I have not posted in quite a while, been ill, but thank God not all to IBS. I have to have a barium swallow tomorrow morning and I already have GERD and usually when I have this test, I wind up throwing up the barium cause it's too thick and I can't swallow it. When I have an abdominal CT, I have the contrast and not the barium, but I have to do the barium tomorrow. Now, I can't remember "if" I get it down, does barium cause diarrhea or constipation? I can't take my fiber or anything in the morning before the tes t so can I take it with me and take it right after. I know the other contrast for a CT Scan give me horrible diarrhea for days. Any help with what the barium is going to do to me. Thanks

I had an upper GI done about 6 or 7 years ago and I honestly can't remember if it gave me C or D. I, like you, had an extremely difficult time drinking the barium. It took me so long that the nurse had to go out to the waiting room and tell my husband that I was ok but it would be awhile because I couldn't drink the stuff.
I'm not sure about the fiber right afterwards either. I guess I'm really not much help except I understand what you are going through. Sorry!
I'm sending you good thoughts for tomorrow. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Janey,
I have had them water it down before too, which really makes it easier to swallow, but kind of defeats the purpose of the test, but I just couldn't get it down and now that I'm having difficulty swallowing it's going to worse. I'm not looking forward to this........but it has to be done.

-------------------- IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Ok, since I'm predominelty D, and use more soluble fiber, should I increase my insoluble (I don't have a lot of safe insoluble), should I continue my Acacia and citrucel regimen as I normally do. I just want to get back to normal asap. Thanks

I usually temporarily up my acacia and fluid intake. If I had an episode and feel sensitive I eat the safest foods, not necessarily increase my IF. I find that by eating less when I have C after a D episode it takes *longer* to go again. I don't go until I've eaten enough to get things moving.
I do eat quite a bit of IF in general though.
