Gluten intolerance and ibs

has anyone noticed that if they don't eat gluten foods their stomach is better? my daughter (who is 18)does not have celiac. we know that from both blood testing and scope. i decided this week to try an experiment with her as she has 5 times daily explosive D - to go on a gluten free diet. she is going to the bathroom less often and not as explosive. any ideas or thoughts? she takes fiber daily (1 tsp. before breakfast and dinner). not much help though if she didn't take any it could be worse? Thank you so much for any help you can give.

Does your daughter have problems with high fructose foods such as apples, pears, watermelon and honey too?
The reason I ask is that perhaps the problem your describe are associated with fructans found in grains such as wheat rather than gluten. Fructans are indigestible carbohydrates composed of chains of fructose sugar molecules. Fructose and fructans are known to be problems for some IBSers. One characteristic of sensitivity to fructose can be diarrhea, gas, bloating, and cramps.
Fructans are found in some soluble fiber supplements too in the form of inulin or FOS.

The body often reacts well to a change like that for a time. I've had that too.

"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Has she been tested for celiac disease? Also, many people (including me) who don't have celiac find that a low-gluten or low-grain diet helps. The only gluten I eat is from oats, which is supposed to be more digestible than, say, wheat gluten.
This book might be worth checking out.

I myself was tested for celiac and it came back negative, but I still follow a wheat free diet, and am remarkably better than I used to be!
If I eat gluten it comes from oats or barley or rye, but even then that amount is small. I have been avoiding wheat for about 2 1/2 years now and I know for sure that was one of the foods that had kept me so sick for so long. I would keep your daughter on a gluten free diet, I am 21 so I understand the frustration of your 18 year old daughter. Let her know that she is not alone! For breakfast I usually have yogurt with cereal ( I can tolerate fat free yogurt, plus it provides me with probiotics), also a banana, some wheat free rye toast with butter and jam and a little glass of orange juice. That probably sounds like a lot but I am a breakfast person and need my energy for the day! Sometimes I have Van's Gluten and Dairy Free waffles as well, they are great.
Here is a list of wheat free cereals I eat:
Puffins Original, Honey Rice and Peanut Butter Nature's Path Honey'd Cornflakes and Mesa Sunrise Mango Peace Cereal and Very Berry Peace Cereal
I don't usually do a lot of snacking, but bananas are a great pick me up and I do enjoy Odwalla Bars. I drink a lot of their protein drinks as well just to keep my protein levels up.

How did you know it was just wheat and not all gluten?
Some of your cereals do contain quite a bit of barley...like the puffins.
What kind of rye bread do you eat that has no wheat? Can you eat this everyday without it bothering you?

For Jordy:
I was tested negative for Celiac, but through trial and error I have discovered that I do better if I completely eliminate wheat from my diet. I don't know if there is a specific test for the wheat intolerance, I just figured it out from experience.
As for the rye bread, it is from a company called Food For Life and the bread is a Wheat Free White Rye, I eat it almost every morning as toast and it never bothers me.
As for the Puffins, I don't see any indication on the ingredients list that they contain barley. The Honey Rice is made with gluten free ingredients which means there is no barley. The Peanut Butter and Original are made from wheat free ingredients.
And for the Odwalla Bars, they are only wheat free.
