Fen,
Your "whole new digestive system"...is this a good or a bad thing??? Do you think the low dose of fluoxentine is helping at all? In the past I have tried a low dose of Lexapro and Zoloft and was worse off with each. I know lots of people have success with ADs. I just can't seem to find anything or do anything that keeps me stable very long. I don't have the constant nausea but I do know the on-edge feeling. I believe that feeling comes from the anxiety caused by the IBS. I must say, when I'm lucky enough to get several good days in a row that feeling starts to subside.

Quoting you from another post "I would literally pay any amount of money if someone could just diagnose me!" You don't know how many times I have said this same exact thing to my husband. And that would be on top of all of the $$$$ we have spent to date!!!

Take care and I hope your move is going well.

Sharon

My friend started Prozac about 2 weeks ago and is a brand new person!!! I wish I knew if it would work for me... Like you, mine is anxiety and any AD's I've taken in the past have caused the anxiety to increase. If I knew Prozac would work, I'd be on it like "white on rice"!

I've tried Zoloft in the past (for something else entirely) and felt like garbage the whole time I was on it. Last year I tried Lexapro for my IBS and it didn't do much for my stomach, though it did help me get through the stress of a move and planning my wedding.

I've been on the Prozac for one week now. And I literally feel like I have a new digestive system. And that's a good thing. I'm going to the bathroom regularly - big, soft, well formed stools. Sometimes more than once a day! With no cramping! As a result my bloating is much better (though not completely gone). And I've been eating beans or lentils every day! I even ate a salad one day! I haven't been daring enough yet to try dairy or potato chips, but maybe soon!

I'm not saying it's the answer for everybody, but it has definitely helped my digestion. It has not helped my insomnia, which is most likely also the result of stress/anxiety, so maybe I need a higher dose. I'm taking 10 mg/day now.

Sharond, thanks for the kind thoughts! Today is my last day of work, so that should help cut down on some of my stress! My plan for next week is to relax and catch up on some much needed sleep, then enjoy the holidays with my family. We'll be packing and moving in early January.

I'm so happy something is working for you Fen. "Garbage"..that's exactly how I felt on Zoloft and Lexapro so that kind of turned me off to all ADs. I was also sick of trying stuff and feeling even worse. I totally relate to the insomnia and I know it's all anxiety driven. I can be doing fine for weeks on end and then I have a bad bout. To get me through those times I usually take an anti-anxiety med (klonopin) to relax me at night. This really helps me to get through a bad bout. I have a really bad habit though; to fall asleep I have to be sitting in my big comfy chair, under a cozy quilt, watching TV. There's a big "DO NOT DISTURB" sign on my forehead!!! When I wake up, I'll crawl into bed.

Best of luck to you on your move. Don't think of it as stressful...think of it as an adventure!!

Happy Holidays.

I am sure it's anxiety related also. I get it pretty bad as I'm leaving for work. I know I'm stressed for the commute to work. Once I get to work I usually feel a little better.

But I also get it randomly throughout the day. Maybe it's my fear of not being able to leave the classroom, which i stress about before classes, but forget about during class (subconciously popping up).

I have a prescription of librax that I haven't tried yet...I'm also very anxious about any side affects and if it will give me an attack. (also have a prescription of antibiotics to kill the bad bacteria that I haven't tried yet).

I really have a problem with the "what if I have an attack".

That's my major cause of anxiety (which only makes the IBS worse).

I went back to work Thursday night after a long absence due to IBS. Everything went fine. I was so "up" about it when I got home. Last night, as I was driving to work, I had a sudden "attack" and had to turn around and come back home. I'm only thankful that nobody saw me.

The emabarrassment is terribly difficult for me to deal with. I'm at the stage where I'm considering wearing Depends.

OMG, I've considered depends also!!
I'm 32 and I keep thinking I'm too young to have these thoughts.
I've never had an accident, I've been able to reach the bathroom in time OR I've considered stopping at the side of the road if I had to. I always have toilet paper and bags in the car (just in case), luckily I haven't had to use them yet.

But depends has crossed my mind!

Me three!!! But, if it eases the stress level then go for it.

Think about it like this: if you suffer from diabetes-you carry your insulin, if you have migraines- you always have your migraine medicine, if you have a broken leg- you have your cast and crutches, if you suffer back pain- you may carry a brace or heat pack...... I could go on and on. We, that have IBS, have just as serious a condition as others and we need to do what we must to have as normal a life as possible.

I know it is hard not to feel embarrassed by Depends, but if they are necessary for your condition, then you should have them. There is such a stigma attached to this product. And, really that is all that it is...a product.

If it gives you peace of mind then do it. After all, who the heck is going to know but you. When you get to where you are going you can take them off. Erica, just think of it as a product and don't associate it with the elderly and sickness.

And Runs, I am so sorry that you just made it back to work and then had this happen. Do you think it is job related, if you were OK when you were off?

Be well

Lynn

Thanks, Lynn!

I had mostly bad days when I was off from work... I was stressed that I'd be losing my job (because of the amount of time I took off). I REALLY don't know what set me off last night as I was driving to the job. (I don't think it was anxiety about work).

Oddly enough, I brought up the idea of wearing Depends to my GI doctor two months ago. He very quickly, and emphatically replied, "NO!". I asked him why and he explained that wearing them would have a bad psychological effect on me. I thought about his response and I eventually agreed with it. Now, I'm not sure he is right.

When I get diarrhea, it usually lasts for a few hours and if I don't eat anything afterwards I'm OK. The "anticipation" (or more precisely, the anxiety) of it happening is worse than the actual attack.

Your reasoning (about wearing Depends) is sound... I suppose it would lessen my anxiety about being away from a toilet.

Thanks for your thoughts, Erica.

I didn't know what librax was until I just looked it up online. I see that it contains lactose and since I'm lactose intolerant I suspect it wouldn't be good for me.

I've been prescribed Xanax (0.5 MG) and that works pretty well in calmimg me down. It unfortunately also makes me somewhat drowsy so I don't want to drive while I'm taking it.

Emotionally, it is quite beneficial for me to read that others here have the same anxieties as I, so thanks for sharing your story.
