I've been taking Maalox for a few days to try and help my gas and bloating and sour stomach with heartburn problem. (I also took a Pepcid - regular strength) Now I feel lots of cramping and very loose BM this morning. (I am normally C) I don't feel like eating much of anything because of it.
I'm taking two teaspoons-twice a day.
This version of Maalox contains: Magnesium Hydroxide 400mg Aluminum hydroxide 400mg Simethicone 40mg
It has helped a little bit, but now I'm having cramps and heading towards D. Which is somewhat worse than the sour stomach and/or heart burn.
Are there any other suggestions as to what to take? I think Mylanta has very similar ingedients.
Note: the cramps are low in my AB. I also have pressure in the upper portion. My whole gut feels tight and swollen.
Thanks for any input!
Carolyn

Maalox essentially is an anti-acid. It will help with problems in the stomach but it is unlikely to help with gas in the lower intestine particularly the bowel.
However the non-medical ingredients in regular Maalox are butylparaben, flavour, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, propylparaben, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sodium saccharin, sorbitol and water. Sorbitol, an alcohol sugar, and sodium saccharin, an artificial sweetener, are know to exacerbate IBS symptoms.
You shouldn't need to take Maalox if you are taking Pepcid for heartburn.
Good luck
