Hi, I'm pretty new to the site and so far have been using the Eating for Ibs book and some tips in there (which are invaluable). The diet is definitely an improvement but I'm still working on finding the right combo of pills and supplements. I've been hearing a lot of good things about probiotics lately and just wondering if anyone had any advice as to which ones are good/should they be taken in addition to soluble fiber, peppermint capsules, etc? Thanks! It's nice to finally have somewhere to ask these questions.

I also am new, and my GI gave me some probiotics to take. Question though - since I've been dairy free for about 5 months, and the IBS diet is pretty dairy free, should I avoid a probiotic with dairy in it?

What was the name of the probiotic you doctor gave you?
Align contains a small amount of milk, however, it has been clinically tested on many hundreds of IBSers with beneficial results.

thanks for the link. yeah, it was Align. do you think i'm ok to take it even though i have been strictly dairy free for a few months?
here's another question for you. my doctor also gave me a prescription for an antibiotic. he said it would help clean out my system of any bad bacteria i might have in there. should i take that before i start the probiotic, at the same time, or does it matter? i tried calling his office to ask him, but the nurses apparently don't deliver messages on thursdays or fridays

another question - is it cheaper to buy probiotics or to have them filled by a pharmacy? as in, should i get a prescription? i looked on amazon and they have them for about $30 for a 4 week supply. just trying to figure it out, espeically if i'm supposed to be on these for the rest of my life...

Personally I have not taken Align because it is not available in Canada. Apparently Protor & Gamble has no immediate intention of making it available here. However, I have taken Life Start which contains a different strain of the same probiotic. Align contains Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 were as Life Start contains Bifidobacterium infantis NLS. Both products contains small amounts of milk, primarily I believe because this probiotic organism grows best in a culture media containing a milk protien caseinate. Life Start did not bother me and a number of people on the board take Align with no problems. I suspect because it only contains a relatively small amount of milk product (sodium caseinate for Align). Consider that each tablet contains about 1/6 of a teaspoon of material you can see there is a relatively small amount of caseinate in a daily dose. The best way to find out is to give it a try and see how it goes. Don't forget that according to the instructions you may experience some bloating and gas for the a while after you start Align.
You might want to take the probiotic a 2-3 hours before or after you take the antibiotic. What antibiotic did you doctor give you? Was it by chance Rifaximin or Neomycin?

True, that is a very small amount of dairy. I actually talked w/ the nurse, and she told me the doctor said to wait until I finished w/ the antibiotic to start taking the probiotic, otherwise the antibiotic would just kill off the probiotic. I don't remember what it's called -- something w/ a "T". I'll have to go look.

If you take the probiotic at least 2 hours after your last dose of the antibiotic for the day, you should be good to go.

BTW, the antibiotic is called Metronitazole (sp), and I have been so sick on it! I hate it!
