Why can we not tolerate caffeine-free sodas?

Two things - the carbonation and the high fructose corn syrup or if diet then the artificial sweetener. Personally I drink an organic ginger ale about twice a week with no ill effects but some IBSers bloat from the carbonation.

Same here, I drink flavored selzer water (just water and natual flavor, no sweetener or anything else). In fact, sometimes if I'm feeling ill it makes me feel better. I think the bubbles push out the gas or something!
