Has anyone ever applied for SSI or SSDI and got it for IBS alone?

I've not seen anyone get DIB based on just IBS. However, the vast majority of people who file have multiple issues, so that is not to say it isn't possible. It doesn't exist as a stand alone impairment code, but could fall under "other GI disorders".

If you are unable to work due to this, you should definitely file. And make sure to list ALL impairments you have (i.e., if you also suffer from anxiety, list it). Sometimes one impairment alone may not be disabling, but they can find that a combination of impairments is. And if you are denied, appeal. It may take a few years, but if you are persistent, many denials are overturned by the judge. HTH

I have not heard of anyone going on disability for IBS, but I have heard of ppl going on disability for anxiety caused by IBS. If you feel the need to apply, then do it, and dont take no for an answer!

I still have a job, yet I get in trouble for going to the bathroom so often and missing so many days that it gets hard to keep it. Also I work at a tax software company, so during tax season the stress is insane. If I want disability, it'll be a long road for me, as I've never been to a specialist. I have though been keeping records of my IBS activity, so I guess that and a GI appointment are a pretty good start.

Just to update. I did get approved for FMLA. It's so that they can't fire me for being late for IBS. It takes a lot of stress off which in itself helps.

I finally had to quit my job around Jan 09 because of the bathroom issues and anxiety/stress it has put on me. I never filed for disability but am wondering if I shouldn't have. I have been thinking about calling them to see if there is anything I can do since its already been 4 months.

You need to call ASAP! You are losing out on potential benefits by not filing. Even if you're denied, if you win on appeal you'll be paid based on your original file date. Good luck.

I just called disability and told them i had quit do to anxiety/ibs and they yes you can get benefits for this. I told them when I originally quit and he said to file asap and write a letter stating that nobody had told me I could get benefits for these specific health issue. So I will be filing a claim, whether I get it or not I don't know but at least I know I can try.

I would go for it. I have also recently applied for disability. I was on state disability but now am applying for federal disability which takes a long time to process. Good Luck :-)

A GI doctor is an excellent idea anyhow just to be sure you've been correctly diagnosed.

Are you IBS-D, C, or A?
