Hi everyone - as you can tell, I am I guess what you call a "newbie". I have had left side pain for 3 1/2 years now and my new doctor diagnosed the pain as IBS. I have been studying Heather's information for quite some time now (before my appt with my new doc), but at the doc's appt, she gave a handout on what foods to eat and not eat - and in the bread column, under foods to avoid, it read "enriched" breads or rolls. So I cross referenced it with Heather's list of Soluble food and I read that flour tortillas are ok - but when I went to the store, the only flour tortillas I could find, the ingredients started with "enriched" flour. Would enriched flour tortillas be safe? Thanks for your help.

Many GI docs will tell their patients not to eat white (enriched) flour and to only eat high fiber foods. For example, my GI doc told me to eat Fiber One cereal for breakfast each day.
Heather's approach is different, in that you eat primarily white flour, soluble fiber foods. The logic is that for many with IBS, these foods are much easier to digest and don't cause as much cramping, pain, and diarrhea. It seems this works well for D folks.
If you're constipation predominant, it's a little more trial and error to see what works for you. For me, these foods are definitely less irritating, but they tend to make my C worse.
Good luck trying to figure this all out!!

Thanks for the info - I have the IBS-C issue, with occasional bouts of IBS-D - but my biggest thing is this constant side stitch feeling, and pressure in my lower back and ribs - my previous doctor told me it was my back. Do these symptoms sound similar to you? Thanks in advance!

Have they checked your gallbladder? I had horrible back pain and chest pain. They thought it was a hiatial hernia but ultrasound showed it was gall stones. The pain was unbearable and I had 4 hour attacks until finally one got stuck and then I felt like dying. I don't have any problems with flour tortillas.

I can identify with the back pain. I get severe pain in my lower back when I am C. It is utterly painful to the point of tears and very difficult to sit. At first when i had this I thought my back was really out of wack and would head off to the chiropracter. Now I know that as soon as I start to "go" again that the pain will subside. It amazes me just how crazy C can be and how many things it affects.
