over to our Pastor's house for "a simple" soup dinner on Christmas. I know he hasked me to bring carrots and celery -- but he didn't tell me what else will be in it. If I make a "safe" bread and bring it to eat also - and maybe some of those anti-depressant brownies ... If the veggies are well cooked I can watch out for fat content and just sip the soup - or skip the broth if it is questionable. Right? What else should I watch out for? I confess I am a little frightened of celery.....even cooked! Should I be?

I understand your concern. Bread and brownies are a great idea. As for the soup - well, if the veggies are cooked well in it, you should be fine. I would try not to worry too much about the celery - unless there's tons of it - which there likely isn't. You can always yes, work your way around them when eating the soup. And as long as it's a broth and not a milk base, you should be able to eat some of it.
Why not ask your pastor what kind of soup it is? You can ask just out of curiosity or just say that you have sensitivities to certain foods and were wondering about the ingredients. Of all people, I should think a pastor would be understanding.

I did ask -- he said he hasn't totally decided yet. It is something he sort of "throws together" as it goes. Sort of a Stone Soup sort of thing - if you're familiar with the book. They add a little of everything. It sounds like we'll be cooking it together after the guests arrive - which means I'll get to see what's in it and how it's made --- but I won't get to control it ahead of time -- and I don't know that he will either --as he's letting people bring stuff to add to the pot.

I have a problem with broccoli, which I dearly love. I keep trying to sneak it in my diet, but each and every time I do I suffer -- BIG time! We're talkin' MAJOR gastro irritant here! Well, last night I fixed Mags' recipe for broccoli leek soup. The veggies are cooked a long time, then you process them in the pot with a hand blender. I ate it -- a LOT of it! Yep, I had my broccoli WITH NO AFTERMATH!!! No cramps last night -- and this morning I had the most perfect BM I've had in a very long time. WOW, what a treat for me!

I guess I'd bring my bread, as you suggested (and oh YEAH -- those magnificent brownies -- YUMMMMY!) and get there early and watch what everyone puts in the pot, making it a fun thing. (I'd also eat something at home before I left, just in case.) And if I had any question about the fat content in the soup stock, I would just pass on it, having filled up on the bread. Bottom line -- it just ain't worth the risk, ya know?

Bev.

All the others are right. Wait and see, and be firm but gracious if you think you can't eat it. Just say you have food sensitivities and simply can't eat it.

Now -- If I were making it -- I can see how I could make it safe -- but I doubt that his version is going to be.... I'm thinking this is one of those things I should eat in advance and skip - but I don't know. This is something traditional that he makes I guess -- and he has invited 3 other families besides ours -- so it's a large gathering. This isn't an intimate event where I can effect change in the recipe. He does know about my IBS - so I can explain that.

Since he knows about your IBS and if he's amiable, maybe you can take a bowl of his soup, stick it in the freezer about 1/2 hour before everyone eats and skim off the fat. It should solidify somewhat by then and you can get it off the top easily.

This is how I handle these things....but it takes some courage. I bring my own pan and cook mine separately. I have had health issues regarding diet for three years now. The IBS part is relatively new to my situation, but I have had to be very careful diet wise for these three years. If I don't I suffer, and it just isn't worth it. You may not feel comfortable doing that with this group, and I understand. I just had to get over that for the most part, although there are still situations that are difficult to manage. You could just make your own soup and bring it or take a little of his stock and add the acceptable ingredients in your pan. I have found that people just are not offended but are very understanding.
Let us know how it goes and Merry Christmas.
