This is my 1st time on your messageboard. I have order your IBS cookbook and also The First Year IBS. I have had IBS for 20 years so this is not new to me. Just recently I have been to two different Urologist doctors for overactive bladder. I been having this problem for 2 or 3 years or more. I have been on 3 different medications for overactive bladder. The 2nd doctor told me that the frequency of urination was due to sympton of IBS. Which I never heard of until I went on some websites and it was correct. Has anyone else heard this, and if so where you able to resolve the problem? The doctor gave me a handout that had some foods that cause this, which some of these make IBS symptons worse. I need help, I go to the bathroom alot and at night I go 3 to 5 times a night which I never get solid sleep. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately I do not have any advice for you. However, I think I sometimes exhibit these symptoms as well. Could you tell me which foods make it worse so I can avoid them? Thank you!

I really don't know what foods is trigger it yet. But the information the doctor gave me was the following foods: Caffeine,Artificial sweeteners, fruits, milk products, spices, nuts, seafood, eggs, alcoholic. But I also, drink 6 glasses of water a day, but you would think that is not alot.

I too have never heard this before but I do experience an active bladder at night. I never connected it to my IBS-c condition!! I always try to treat for a bladder infection. Has anyone seen it documented that this indeed try?

Go to website DigestivesPlus.com and at top go to IBS and it talks about the symptons. And under Symptoms Outside the Gastrointestinal Tract it states frequent & urgent urination. I been on 3 medicines for overactive bladder and they don't work. 2nd urologist told me it was IBS and it is hard to treat ibs symptons. I would just love to not pee so much day and night.

Are you C or D? If your bowels are full of poop, it can cause pressure on your bladder and increase urination.

If this is not the case, and the OAB meds have not helped you, you may want to look into Interstitial Cystitis. Google it and see if your symptoms match.

I am more D than C but not D all the time, I went on to yahoo and looked up the condition you mention. But I don't have that, it mention painful urination which I don't have. It usually takes 2 or 3 days before I poop, so I don't think it would be that. Any other suggestions?

Kathy,

Check out this website womentowomen.com. On the left hand side under "Articles by Health Topic" choose "Urinary and Pelvic Health". Right now I am working with a physical therapist for a pelvic floor issue and you would not believe the issues that a person can have .... actually my GI specialist sent me to a physical therapist. The IBS and pelvic floor problem can kind of feed off of each other. Anyway, a good, qualified physical therapist who specializes in pelvic floor dysfunction can definitely help you with your issue. There is a brain/bladder control and all it takes is the muscles being retrained and it DOES work. If you look into this, I cannot stress how important it is to find a therapist who specializes in this....I went to one for several visits who was inexperienced and gave me very little help. If there are any women's clinic in your area, give them a call first. I was fortunate, I called a women's clinic where they had a pelvic floor specialst and spoke wtih her over the phone first....kind of like an interview. I am amazed at the knowledge she has....I have gotten more out of my appointments with her than I ever have with a doctor. Good luck.

Sharon

I would like to wholeheartedly agree with Sharon's suggestion to see a PT-someone who is specially trained in treating women's issues and pelvic floor disfunction. If you are lucky enough to live in the Twin Cities (St. Paul/Minneapolis) get in touch with me and I will give you the name of someone who fantastic.
