Hellmann's Reduced Fat mayo has changed names and ingredients, but not labels. It's now called "Hellmann's Low Fat"; on the side of the label it says, "Formerly Reduced Fat". It's still has the same label and the same green top.

It's not any less IBS-safe than it was (ingredient comparison below). However, to me it now tastes like absolutely nothing and the texture is, well, kind of gross. Sort of like soft whipped cream.

I was able to find jars of the Reduced Fat at a smaller grocery store I use so if you're a fan of this mayo you might want to stock up if you can - just check the expiration date before you buy 100 jars.

If anyone has a mayonnaise they really like, would you please let me know. Thanks.

Here are the ingredients for the two formulas:

Reduced Fat: Water, Soybean Oil, Modified Corn Starch, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Vinegar, Egg Whites, Salt, Cellulose Gel and Gum, Colors Added, Natural Flavors, Xanthan Gum, (Sodium Benzoate, Calcium Disodium EDTA) , Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Phosphoric Acid, Spice, Paprika Oleoresin, Turmeric.

Low Fat: WATER, MODIFIED CORN STARCH*, SOYBEAN OIL, VINEGAR, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP*, EGG WHITES, SALT, SUGAR, XANTHAN GUM*, LEMON AND LIME PEEL FIBERS*, COLORS ADDED*, LACTIC ACID*, (SODIUM BENZOATE*CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA) , PHOSPHORIC ACID*, NATURAL FLAVORS.

They've reduced the amount of soybean oil proportionate to modified corn starch and are now using HFCS and sugar. The other changes are:

Reduced Fat contained Cellulose Gel and Gum; Citric Acid; Spice; Paprika Oleoresin; and Turmeric. Low Fat does not have these.

Low Fat contains LEMON AND LIME PEEL FIBERS. Reduced Fat did not have these.

As far as fat is concerned:

Reduced Fat: 20 calories, 20 from fat
Low Fat: 15 calories, 10 from fat

Sand, what about Nayonaisse (spelling????) It's nonfat and it works great in the recipes I have used it in. It is soy-based so I don't know if this is a turn off for you. Good luck.

I use the Miracle Whip Light, it has less than 2% of egg yolks and I have been able to tolerate it fine.

Thanks Sand!

You, my dear, are a wealth of information for which the board is truly blessed!! I've been buying the red lid mayo as I cannot get the green lid here any longer at all, no stores seem to have it. (That is, if I'm not buying veggenaise.)

I don't know if there are any regular grocery store mayos that don't have HFCS. Someday I'm going to read all the labels on all the mayos in the store. Someday.

Here's what the Kraft Website says:

LIGHT MAYONNAISE - Serving Size is 15 grams (about 1 Tablespoon)
40 calories per serving, 35 from fat
Ingredients: WATER, SOYBEAN OIL, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, MODIFIED FOOD STARCH, VINEGAR, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF EGGS, SALT, EGG YOLKS, SUGAR, POTASSIUM SORBATE AND CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA AS PRESERVATIVES, MUSTARD FLOUR, PHOSPHORIC ACID, LEMON JUICE CONCENTRATE, XANTHAN GUM, DRIED GARLIC, DRIED ONIONS, PAPRIKA, VITAMIN E ACETATE, SPICE, NATURAL FLAVOR, BETA CAROTENE (COLOR).

FAT FREE DRESSING - Serving Size is 16 grams ( about 1 Tablespoon)
10 calories per serving, 0 from fat
Ingredients: WATER, MODIFIED FOOD STARCH, SUGAR, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, VINEGAR, SOYBEAN OIL, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF SALT, CELLULOSE GEL, NATURAL FLAVOR, ARTIFICIAL COLOR, EGG YOLKS, XANTHAN GUM, MUSTARD FLOUR, LACTIC ACID, CELLULOSE GUM, PHOSPHORIC ACID, VITAMIN E ACETATE, LEMON JUICE CONCENTRATE, DRIED GARLIC, DRIED ONIONS, SPICE, YELLOW 6, BETA CAROTENE, BLUE 1, WITH POTASSIUM SORBATE AND CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA AS PRESERVATIVES.

As far as ingredients, both contain HFCS and both contain egg yolks although in both cases the amount of egg yolk is probably tolerable. At this point, I could probably eat either of them and do fine but you'll just have to try then to see if the HFCS bothers you. The Light has more fat (obviously) but it's still less than half the fat of the Kraft Real Mayonnaise (which, I'm annoyed to see, does *not* have any HFCS).

I'd probably buy the smallest jar I could find of each and see what you think of the tastes. Remember, too, you can always try mixing them half and half if the Light tastes better to you but you want to cut the fat.

BTW, Heather has an Italian tuna, lemon, and basil pasta salad in her EFI cookbook that's awfully good and uses no mayo.

HTH.

No, corn syrup and HFCS are not the same thing. My info is from the Website. If the jar says something different then it just means the Website is out of date. Go with what the jar says.

if you put a little into a big bowl of pasta that's fine. Let's say you're making a pasta salad and you're going to use 1/2 box of elbow macaroni. That much elbow macaroni has 800 calories, 40 of them from fat. That means you can use 8 Tablespoons (1/2 cup) of the Kraft Light in your pasta salad and still be close to the 25% CFF range.

Here's the math:

Pasta: 800 calories, 40 from fat
Mayo: 320 calories, 280 from fat

Total: 1180 calories, 320 from fat (27% CFF)

And that's before you add in whatever meat, fruit, veggies you're going to use in the salad.

A half cup of mayo for a half box of pasta is a lot. When I make RachelT's Almond Chicken Salad, I use 3/8 cup of mayonnaise for a half box of pasta plus all the chicken, celery, onions, grapes, and almonds that are in it.

There's also a trick I saw the Barefoot Contessa use in one of her potato salads: thin the mayonnaise. I tried it and it worked fine. She thinned 1 cup of mayo with 1/4 cup of buttermilk but said white wine or chicken broth would work, too. I tried chicken broth and the salad was fine.

So I'd say that if the Kraft Light ingredients look IBS-safe, try it. Measure carefully, thin the mayo with a little chicken broth to make it go further, eat a handful or pretzels or some saltines before you dive in, and see how you do.

HTH.
