I think it was the salmon

Hi

I made salmon salad with salmon and fat free mayo. Then I made a sandwich using a flour tortilla.

I had strong abdominal contractions, then a BM. Twenty minutes later, very loose stools. An hour later, another cluster of soft stools. I thought I ate everything right today.

We went out for breakfast this morning. I had scrambled eggs, plain toast with jelly and hash brown potatoes. Water to drink.

I just swallowed one of Heather's peppermint capsules. If this keeps up I will take an Imodium.

Any comments are welcome. Thanks!

Hash browns can be very greasy - I'm IBS-C and greasy diner food always gives me loose stools! Just a thought

Unless you request otherwise, scrambled eggs contain egg yolks which are a trigger food. Also, they're usually scrambled in butter which is dairy (a trigger food) and high in fat (also a trigger food). As the other poster said, hash browns are usually high in fat and they may contain bacon which is red meat which is a trigger food. Also, depending on how much toast you ate, you may not have gotten enough of an SF base.

Salmon is a high-fat fish. You can eat it but you need to be sure you add enough other food to it to lower the percent of calories from fat into a manageable range. One flour tortilla is not going to do that and - especially when you're first starting out - is not enough of an SF base.

I don't think it was any one thing but you've spent the whole day eating trigger foods, way too little SF, and way too much fat. That's bound to cause problems.

I know you're waiting to get Heather's book but if you want to start feeling better faster you really need to read through the guidelines on the Website.

HTH.

I forgot salmon is a high fat fish- I mean I was aware I just didn't think about it. If I had a serving (1/2 a cup) of brown rice with my salmon tonight, would that help?

Man its hard to follow this diet sometimes. As for Candy2, maybe it would help if we gave you some ideas of things to eat. I would avoid going out for a few days if at all possible since you never know what they are putting in your food when you go out. Some safe foods you should eat the next few days (please correct me if I'm wrong on the safety of these items as I am just learning too!)

1. plain oatmeal (i know this is half soluble and half insoluble so you may have to be a bit careful) with peeled and cut apples in it
2. cheerios- my favorite, eat them dry or with plain or vanilla soy milk, I buy the light version for less fat and I love it
3. rice cakes- I love the apple cinnamon quakes
4. soy yogurt- o'soy and whole soy are both good just be careful on sugar intake if that bothers you
5. white bread, as much as possible- you can put one tablespoon of peanut butter on it, or almond butter
6. lots of white meat chicken, grilled if possible in the least possible amount of oil or anything like that
7. lots of white rice
8. applesauce

I am blanking on what else I eat- I swear I don't eat the same thing every day (haha okay I almost do).
If I were you I wouldn't worry about taste and flavor for a few days, just straighten out your stomach. Then when you get the cookbook and get a bit more stable you can test out different ideas. Good luck!

Yup. Any reasonably sized portion of an SF food would help. If you're feeling mathematically inclined, you can do the fat math to figure out what your fat percent is with the salmon and rice combined.

BTW, my rule when I first started out was about twice as much SF as protein+IF in my meals. As an IBS-D, I really wanted to super-load on SF.

HTH. And I think the list of "what to eat" is a great idea. I'd add pretzels as a great go-to snack and pasta with just a little garlic salt (if that doesn't bother you, Candy2). For something tastier, try Heather's Brown Sugar Banana bread - low fat and very soothing - or the Anti-Depressant Brownies on the Recipe Board - when I first started out and despaired over my food choices, those brownies kept me going.

I was a little hasty last night. When I said:

I was mixing up two different ideas or at least not choosing my words carefully enough. Any reasonably sized portion of any low-fat food would reduce the percent of calories from fat in your salmon dinner. And (obviously) you need an SF base for all your meals. So the SF here is doing double-duty as a base and a low-fat balance to the salmon - but it's not only SF foods that can bring down the fat percent in a meal.

(Why do I have the feeling I just made everything more confusing?)

Hi Sand,

In the restaurant yesterday I asked them to make sure there was no milk or butter in my breakfast. That doesn't mean they did this. Also in the future I will avoid hash browns or anything fried.

Thank you so much for all who replied to my post. I should be getting my Starter Kit#1 for IBS any day now.

After yesterday I am almost afraid to eat anything.

Sand,
I understand what you mean. I need soluble fiber with every meal, but with the salmon in particular I need to make sure I have enough of a no or low fat soluble fiber to balance out the fat of the salmon and make less of my calories be from fat (percentage wise).

Sand- I really appreciate all the advice you offer on this board. You have provided a lot of important information to reinforce and add to all the reading I have done.

I don't know what breakfast places are like in Wisconsin but in New Jersey if you order something at a diner it's cooked on the same giant griddle where they cook everything else. So whatever butter or fat is already on the griddle you get even if they don't add any extra.

Please don't be afraid to eat. Besides all the other reasons, it's really hard on your tummy. Take a look at kteach's suggestions for what to eat and at mine. Then figure out a simple menu. Or take a look at this old post and see how someone with IBS-C eats: web page.

And I'm afraid kteach is right - going out to eat is difficult when you're first starting out. You need to be very careful about what you eat in the beginning and it's hard to control what goes into restaurant food.
