Lactose Intolerance

So I saw a GI for the first time since my constipation, pain, gas, bloating started in January. I described my symptoms to him and explained that cheese seemed to agrivate the symptoms the most. He immediately diagnosed me with lactose intolerance....not IBS. I started taking a probiotic which got rid of all the gas and bloating completely right away. I'm still taking the acacia, but the GI also gave me another supplement to take which is for chronic constipation...it's basically soluble fiber with some other junk added to it. I haven't taken this one, because I think I don't need to since I'm already taking the acacia. Is this the right thing to do? My symptoms haven't totally cleared up though and I'm somewhat doubting that it just lactose intolerance. This probiotic is started by taking to doses for the first two days then one dose every day after. Yesterday was the first day I only took one dose which I took in the morning. That night I had terrible heartburn/indegestion. Is it possible that it may just take a while for my body to adjust to the probiotic or should I continue with the two doses like it suggests on the package for some people? Any one else have any experience like this who could give me advice?

What are the names of the fiber product and probiotic you were given?

Both of those products contain probiotics. However, the DA for constipation also contains a SF call Konjac glucomannan and the DA for lactose intolerance also contains lactase to help with the digestion of lactose. It is possible that it can take a few days to get use to both probiotics and the SF. However, it could also be something that you ate.
Did you GI doc say you only had lactose intolerance or IBS with lactose intolerance? The later is quite common.

I take Digestive Advantage for IBS, and it has helped me quite a bit. I took two doses for about a month, and then reduced it to one dose a day because I felt I was stable enough. Right now I'm back up to two because I'm taking antibiotics, which increases my symptoms. Once it settles down again I'll go back to one a day.

I mentioned that I thought I could have IBS or a food allergy and he just said lactose intolerance. So I should take both probiotics and the acacia too...all three?

It can't hurt - you will just get a bit more SF

a pre-diagnosis. Like, if staying off lactose and taking probiotics and fiber works then you don't have to be tested for IBS. Most doctors will take you off dairy when you mention digestive problems as a first step and with further problems go ahead and give you more tests to see if you have IBS. Make sure to be proactive and journal your results and do what is recommended then if you still have problems your doctor can proceed if necessary. Good luck!
