Thanks

I'm quite relieved that i can eat dairy- i've missed it loads too! You're right- whatever the diagnosis i'm going to have to avoid gluten forever anyway!

I think sugar causes me problems too. I'm a fellow sugar addict and i think it makes me bloated because whenever i have lots of it in my day (which is often) i get bloating. I kept a food diary this past week and it's shocking how my diet is made up of so much sugar, and how the amount of sugar i eat coincides with bloating. However, i'm not sure if i can give up my love affair with it. I am trying to limit it but it's so difficult... I don't know how you can do gluten free, EFI and low sugar!

Hope you're ok. Good luck with the test next week

"I don't know how you can do gluten free, EFI and low sugar"

Well, I've only been low sugar for about two days (that's when I had my "sugar epiphany") . I'm not sure for how long I can do it. I read somewhere that it takes 5 days to overcome the withdrawal cravings and then 2 months to make not eating it a new habit. But that's probably for normal people and not someone who has been seen eating sugar cubes in the past . So we'll see...:). The food diary is a good idea, I really have to make myself to keep one.

I am so curious to know what foods where on that journal. Do you realize the freedom this gives you!!!! Oh, how I miss coffee, salads, cheeseburgers with the works, and so much more!

Were you eating GF before you joined the Helpforibs website? If not, I can understand how starting the two at the same time could confuse you...which is where I'm at! I never got stable with just one or the other....or with doing both at the same time.

Did the dietician offer you anymore advice than to remain GF?I know you mentioned you still had bloating or a few other nagging problems. I can't believe you can eat ANYTHING that is GF. What kind of "specialist" is she? I need to go to one!

I agree...why test for celiac if you are having such good results with GF!

Maybe you haven't reached a high enough amount yet? Are you still taking a probiotic or Dig. Enzymes?

Right now, I'm still following both diets, like you. But I think I really need to try just one...just don't know which one to pick! I don't think I feel that much difference being GF...but who knows...maybe I'd feel even worse. There must be some reason for those positive gluten antibodies. Maybe it's the stress of trying to do both diets? And the fear I develop when I read other people's triggers?

Are you not eating a lot of gf substitutes? I find that they (the rice bread, cookies, muffins) actually increased my C so much. That's where I'm at now. I used to be chronic D before going GF.

Honestly, Sarah, I don't know what I'm gonna do...I don't know what my answer is.

Are you feeling better on this diet? I never thought of sugar as a problem since it's not "suppose to be". Let me know how you do!

Yeah, it's possible that I'd need to take more (now 1.5t twice a day). But I also feel like it's just unnatural to take that much fiber just from supplements. At the same time I realize that I can't eat too many IF rich foods either.

Right now I'm not doing any enzymes or probiotics. I finished the VSL#3 with no results so I feel like I should just give my body a break for a few weeks.

I'm not sure if I can help you with picking out which diet to go with. Do you remember which one made you feel less bad just on its own? I'd start with that one but tweak it a little and incorporate something what you find beneficial from the other diet. Like I know for a fact that fatty foods bother me regardless of whether they do or do not contain gluten. So I stay away from those. I think the EFI diet is a very good place to start but then we really need to customize it to our needs. For me I believe that it can really help with diarrhea and somewhat with constipation but I don't think it's effective on its own when it comes to treating bloating. Bloating is one of my biggest problems so I'm looking elsewhere to take care of it. That's why I'm trying GF.

I really hope you find out which approach is the best for you!

It's nice to have you guys back!

Zara, I know what you mean about the "sugar epiphany" – I can't eat a lot of sugar either, and not just fructose (I recently tried a fruit cup experiment that failed miserably). I always felt better when I ate less sugar. And it DOES get easier - back when I was doing the Atkins diet, I found that within a month or so I was already becoming "turned off" by sugar. I used to put 2 sugars in my coffee every day, and suddenly one day I didn't want it anymore. I can't STAND sugar in coffee now – not that I drink coffee anymore but you know what I mean. And now when I bake I always cut the sugar by a third – if I use the entire amount called for I find it too sweet. And the stuff definitely contributes to gas and bloat!

Sarah, that's great that your dr wants you to eat more dairy – I'm jealous! Actually I'm doing better with the whole missing dairy thing – within the last month my cheese cravings have really begun to subside. Took long enough! And I'm so glad the GF diet seems to be working for you – hopefully you have found your magic bullet with this one! I just asked my dr to test me for Celiac last month because I couldn't recall if I'd ever been tested for it, and it came back negative. So now if I ever decide to try GF it will be by my own choice, rather than necessity.

IBS-A since age 12, and fructose sensitive; with the exception of my pregnancy, have been following Heather's diet since Nov. 19, 2007.
Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!

Hi Erilyn, your post is so encouraging! I'm glad to hear it does get easier because right now, after every meal, my stomach is like, "ok, now what, gimme something sweet" . So today I did have a little bit of chocolate (but less then usual) and I'm planning being strong after dinner, lol! Hopefully that will mean less bloating tomorrow - I am very results-driven !

Hi There. I've not done much blogging or whatever this is called, but, I just wanted to say that I have had IBS for about 7 years now, and only recently have it under control.
I went to a doctor about a year ago who put me on anti-spasmadic meds. However, I have been cutting back on the quantities he wanted me on.(1st he had me taking them twice a day, but, I found one in the morning was all I needed)
Recently we went to Hawaii, and it was very relaxing. I worried that drinking different water, eating different foods would get me going again, but, it didn't. AS a matter of fact, things were going so well, that when I came home I tried just taking the Peppermint Capsules that I ordered from this website, and drink peppermint tea/sometimes fennel tea (for gas) and see how things went. I've been great! I haven't taken a anti-spasmadic pill for 3 weeks now, and outside of a little gas which the tea seems to have helped, I'm doing fine. I have been pretty much eating anything I want. But, I do notice that I have to eat small meals, often, and I have better results than when I skip meals, etc.
