Hello all. You mention several times that white bread, white rice and so on is better for the stomach. Where other health experts say to eat whole wheat/whole grain because of the nutrients and fiber. Where do you get the good stuff if you eat the white foods? Thank you.

You get the good stuff from the foods you put on top of the rice and pasta or between the slices of bread. These foods are primarily a source of carbohydrates.

White rice, white bread (preferrably sourdough) and pasta don't contain the insoluble fibers that are known to cause problems to IBSers. Consider the biggest difference between white bread, rice and pasta and brown bread, rice and pasta is the fact the brown products contain bran - an insoluble fiber. There are relatively small differences between the vitamin and mineral content of brown and white foods. The difference can easily be made up by selecting other foods carefully.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have been eating whole wheat/multi grains for years because of the health benefits. At this stage, I am very confused by what food I put in my mouth. I've been having gas/bloating for years which I thought was due to being lactose intolerant. I recenty did research because when I didn't even have milk products, my stomach did the same thing. I went to a GI and had a fructose test done and it came back positive. Went to a nutrienist and had these mind over matter (finger to finger - hard to explain) and he came back saying I'm not fructose intolerant but sensitive to table sugar & gluten. So now I'm trying to fix myself. Thanks again.

I have problems with fructose. Unless you have hereditary fructose intolerance which is a disease unlike fructose malabsorption which is what you GI doc tested you for it is quite unlikely that you will have difficulties with table sugar. Similarly, unless you GI doc diagnosed you with celiacs disease it is quite unlikely that gluten will be a problem either. On the other hand you may have problems with excess consumption of wheat products because they contain fructans. Fructans are long chains of fructose molecules found in a variety of foods which are particularly high in wheat products.

Have read Heathers Eating for IBS (EFI) or explored the how to eat for IBS?

If you are looking for a list of foods that you can or cannot eat with fructose malabsorption check Figure 2 in the second reference listed in this message. The foods on the left hand side of the table are unfavorable while the foods on the right hand side are favorable.

If you have any questions about the diet please ask.
