I talked to a chiropractor who claims to have "cured" his IBS by taking plant enzymes and omega 3 fish oil. Has anyone heard of this approach?? He says that many IBS patients don't have sufficient enzymes to break down the food so it ferments in the small intestines creating gas and bloating and moves too fast in some cases (D) and not fast enough in others (C). I am doing so well on the diet that I am actually fearful of changing anything. He says he can now eat anything except lactose???

I take both the digestive enzymes and the fish oil. Unfortunately, in my case, they have not offered any benefit that I can tell...unless I would be even worse without them. But it definitely is a far far cry from a cure.
I would try them if I were you. Maybe they would be helpful for someone is already having success with diet.

Digestive enzymes made my symptoms worse. They frequently contain ground up plant material very high in IF.
There isn't any research evidence to support the notion that IBS suffers have insufficient enzymes to break food. AND the small intestine does not contain bacteria capable of fermenting food unless there is some structural defect or disease. However, Lactose intolerance is one of the few digestive problems for which the digestive enzyme - lactase - does work well

Thanks Syl. I knew this was too good to be true but he sounded so believable. I tried enzymes from GNC before I went to the doctor for the diagnosis and before I started the diet and they made me much worse at that time.

Yes, but he gave me the website and told me I could get them cheaper from the website so I don't think he was making a sales pitch. He seemed to be convinced that this had cured his IBS.
