For the last seven days i have been totally gluten-free (was just wheat-free) and eat minimal amounts of dairy. The gluten-free diet was working a dream. However, Sunday night i had a little more chocolate than usual (i usaully just have a couple of squares a day). Then i got an attack of D which never happens as i'm really C! And woke up on Monday morning with a normal BM and major urgency. Since then i've been rather constipated. Any ideas why?

I'm glad to hear that the GF diet seems to work - at least somewhat! About the D - I'm not sure but I think that once our system gets used a certain dietary (no gluten in your case) it may react differently to triggers. When I first tried GF almost two years ago I seemed to do pretty well for about two months and then out of the blue I started having D attacks and had them for almost 4 weeks. I actually didn't mind too much because they came at night and at least I wasn't constipated and bloated during the day. I just waited and my digestion finally settled again. During that time I wasn't dairy free (before D attacks, during, or after, I ate dairy during the entire GF stint which lasted about 5 months). What kind of chocolate do you eat, dairy or dairy-free? I really made a commitment and didn't even have a piece of dairy choc. since Thursday. I started feeling better but yesterday stupidly ate a lot of peanuts so I'm waiting for my "punishment" sometime around this afternoon. I don't have a solution, I'd just say focus on not cheating and wait it out .

Hi Zara, thanks for your reply. I ate dairy chcoclate (and about 150g of it!) I was PMT so was having a right old binge! This week my will power seems to be zero- i had ice-cream last night. This morning am feelig surprisingly fine and not bloated so i'm waiting for the constipation to set in. Oh well.
I hope your punishment doesn't come from eating the peanuts. Well done on not eating chocolate since thursday. I don't think i could do it... although i need to.

Hopefully you'll be OK even with the ice cream . What I meant is not that I didn't have chocolate since Thursday (impossible for me ) but I just buy chocolate that doesn't have dairy. My favorite is Lindt Excellence and they have it in the UK, too ( dark chocolate ). I actually ate the entire bar on Monday and was fine (I completely understand how you can eat 150g of chocolate ). I have a sweet tooth so I have to look for substitutes, otherwise I'd go crazy. So for now it's that chocolate and Swedish Fish or other kind of gummi candy.

Ah, i see. I love Lindt chocolate! It's amazing. I have a major sweet tooth too. I can't go a day without some kind of sugary substance!
Y'know, I find it so difficult to stick to a diet because it works one week and then not the next so the majority of the time i end up thinking i might as well eat whatever i want because nothing seems to work consistently - I'm having one of those weeks this week.

That's EXACTLY how I feel! I wouldn't mind sticking to the diet if I knew it was going to work 100% all the time. But, just like you said, if I get sick anyway, I'm like, "I might as well eat whatever". Which usually makes me even more sick - vicious cycle . What really gives me strength is postings by people who managed to get stable. They all say it takes a while and that we all have periods of feeling bad. But, as we are getting better, these "bad periods" are becoming more and more rare. I keep reading that document by K2 when I feel like my willpower is slipping. She makes it sounds so clear and easy, so I keep telling myself that if Kat could do it, so can I.
I also read the glutenfreeforum.com sometimes. It was created for people with celiacs but actually a lot of them have never been properly diagnosed, they just found on their own that they have a problem with wheat/gluten. And a good number of them said that the bloating took a while to go away, but that they stuck to the diet and now they're doing well. That gives me hope that my bloating will go away eventually, as long as I'm really good about the diet. Hang in there, Sarah, it will get better again!

YES, YES, YES...so frustrating. I avoid Gluten yet I still hurt...so why do I restrict gluten still? Same with fructose? So aggravating, frustrating, confusing....I don't know what to eat or not eat.
I forget, why do you two ladies avoid gluten or wheat?

Sorry to butt in on your thread, ladies, but I just had a few thoughts!
I used to be able to eat pizza, fast food, cheese, and all sorts of forbidden things without any problems, MOST of the time. I found this website almost 4 years ago, but only started the diet 3 months ago because I thought, well, nearly all the foods that Heather mentions don't bother me on a regular basis at all! But, long story short, a recent series of very frustrating events from July to November finally led me to try the diet. I cut out all the bad foods and STILL got attacks. So I thought the same thing – I eat the wrong things, I get attacks, and if I DON'T eat the wrong things, I STILL get attacks, so what's the point? I almost gave up in my first week. But the diet does not work that fast. As you said, there are plenty of people on this board who have become stable, but only after months, or even years following the diet. Personally I have been doing the diet for 3 months now and I am not yet stable. But I feel like I am 70-80% there. Last month I would have said 50%. The month before that I probably would have said it's hardly working at all. I'm getting better, but it's taking time!
-------------------- IBS-A since age 12, and fructose sensitive; with the exception of my pregnancy, have been following Heather's diet since Nov. 19, 2007.
Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!

Jordy, I focus on avoiding wheat. However, I end up avoiding gluten as well because I try to eat as little processed food as possible (and processed food can have gluten added) and the ingredients I use are naturally GF. Sorry I can't give you a clear answer!

Erilyn, thanks for the input, new thoughts/ideas are always welcome . I'm glad you're feeling much better on the diet!
I'm sorry if I meant it sound like I don't believe in this diet (EFI) and therefore I'm looking elsewhere. What I'm looking to do is to combine EFI plus no wheat/gluten. I've been following the EFI since last summer, I had a few slip-ups but pretty much always got back on track. I definitely believe that coffee is a no-no for me, as well as dairy. The dairy part is a huge step because I've been thinking about this a lot and wondering if it's really a trigger for me. Plus, I wasn't sure if I could still get aways with some here and there (dairy chocolate, etc). The thing is, I'm doing better with the constipation but what still really bothers me is the gas/bloating. It's both painful and annoying, I'm sure you know what I mean. Unfortunately, the EFI diet hasn't helped me with bloating at all. That's why I feel like I need to try something else, on top of EFI.
