I am new to all this, please bear with me. I was diagnosed in summer '06 with IBS-C based on my description to my doc. (I had C since having my son in Feb. '03 by c-section - I think I saw on the site that pregnancy and surgery can bring it on, so...) My symptoms seemed to follow my monthly cycle with some months being better than others (depends on my anxiety level, a big contributor for me). My doc told me my symptoms weren't from cancer or a tumor or something bad, because if that was the cause, things would get worse, not come and go. So, should I push for some type of testing? Following the diet suggestions seems to work. Thanks for any and all help.

If I were you I would ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist and let the specialist decide what tests you need. It will depend on syptoms, age, etc. but some tests are important to alleviate other problems that can exhibit the same as IBS. Good luck to you.

Hi Carol, I agree with Barbara. You should see a gastroenterologist who will do a series of tests to exclude other causes. Besides IBS it could also be IBD, celiac disease, various malabsorptions, bacteria overgrowth, parasites... It's important to exclude all of these.
Also, you said you symptoms get worse around your period? Talk to your gyno as well to make sure you don't have endometriosis.
