I've been dealing with what I believe is IBS for the last couple of years. I've started taking soluble fiber supplements everyday and have gotten better over the last three weeks. Unfortunately, today I regressed and can't figure out why? My main symptom is I feel fine and go to use the restroom and without getting too graphic my stools go from normal to diarrhea. Like I just suddenly lose control, and the my stomach pretty much girgles for the next couple of hours. If I have a normal bowel movement in the morning, I'm fine the rest of the day. But if I have a diarrhea movement then my stomach is upset. Broke down and bought a hypnosis CD online. But starting to get frustrated. Anybody out there with similar symptoms that may have any suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Okay, firstly and most importantly, you CANNOT self-diagnose IBS. There are lots of things that have similar symptoms and some are serious, so you must get a proper diagnosis.

IBS is diagnosed by ruling out everything else, so you need to have stool tests, a colonoscopy and check that it's not an allergy (eg. Celiac).

Next, until you take all triggers out of your diet, then bad days are going to happen. Even when you're stable, then sometimes it just all goes wrong. So many things can trigger IBS - stress, illness, diet, traveling, weather - that ruling them all out is pretty much impossible. Sorry!

Get to your doctor and get diagnosed. Then you can know for sure what it is and do your best to manage it.

Linz is right. You gotta go get a colonoscopy! You haven't had that done yet? Don't put it off -- and don't get freaked out by some of these horror stories. Just insist that they knock you out -- COMPLETELY. I had a very pleasant experience; the drugs they gave me were magnificent (wish I knew what they were!); I was out immediately, and when I woke up it was all over and I felt terrific; I sat up and hugged everybody, kissed my GI doc (EW), and floated out of there, arm-in-arm with my hubbie, floated home and laughed all the way. Thanks. I have had a colonoscopy and pretty much all of the work-ups done. Unfortunately, they did not take a biopsy so I will probably have another one done. I've come to the conclusion that I'll have to pinpoint the food and other triggers. I haven't read about any medications to help diarrhea IBS. Any more thoughts?
