I remember reading in Heather's book that she "hasn't thought about her own IBS in a long time" because she knows all the right things to eat. Is this sort of utopia possible? Or is "stable" just a "as good as you can get it" sort of concept?
For those of you ARE stable (and please give your definition of "stable"), how long did it take you to get there?

Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!

I have no idea and I wish more would have replied because this is a very good question. Some will say if you go without a few days, weeks or months without an attack you are stable, to me stable means never having an attack as long as you live!!! But, as you said is that possible? In my opinion no, but very good question.......others please respond!! Thanks

Yeah, I wish I knew what stable feels like, too! I think that everyone has their own standard when it comes to "stable". And (at least from what I've read here) to me it seems (and I might be wrong) that D people are more lenient in their definition. I've seen people stating something like "I'm pretty stable because my D is gone and I only get pain and bloating". For me, however, having pain and bloating is far from being stable. But I do understand that getting rid of D is a huge improvement for someone who felt like she was about to spend the rest of her life sitting on a toilet. Constipation at least doesn't keep me from leaving my house (it's cramps and pain but we all have those, C's and D's). So I think that stable means seeing a huge improvement in your symptoms, whether it means getting rid of C/D or not being bloated all the time. For me stable would be not having pains and cramps and bloating and feeling pretty much the same way I was pre-IBS. I really hope to get there one day .

I guess that would be true because while I do get C, I think the D is FAR worse. If I could get rid of the D I would happily live with the occasional bout of C! I've seen people stating something like "I'm pretty stable because my D is gone and I only get pain and bloating". For me, however, having pain and bloating is far from being stable. Constipation at least doesn't keep me from leaving my house (it's cramps and pain but we all have those, C's and D's). See, that's it for me - I've lived those days where I was afraid to leave the house. Although I've had times when I've been C only to suddenly have an explosive urge of D. I can't win. So I think that stable means seeing a huge improvement in your symptoms, whether it means getting rid of C/D or not being bloated all the time. Or at least back to a period of stable "remission", like I used to get. I've had IBS my entire teen and adult life, so I don't really remember what "pre-IBS" feels like...

These were my thoughts, too! I hardly consider "a few days" to be stable. Knock on wood, but I guess my IBS isn't as bad as what some people go through. I do wish more people would respond - I have seen people who's signatures say they are stable - where are you!!
