I'm currently taking the Jarro-dophilus EPS probiotics. I've emailed the company and asked if it is safe to take these long term, and they said "yes it is".
I'm not too hip on taking any kind of medication/supplement on a long term basis, however, I will if it supports good health, and more importantly is safe to do so.
Has anyone any input on long term use of probiotics?

Taking these long term should be fine as the bacteria occur naturally in your gut and are very much needed.

Okay, I'm gonna show my stupidity here. What the heck is a "probiotic"? I didn't wanna haveta show my ignorance, so I tried to look it up in the medicial dictionary. It wasn't there. I went through Heather's books, and it wasn't there either. It has a very foreboding name, I'm not really sure I wanna ask -- but -- what does it "probe"? Bev

Probiotics restore the natural good gut flora! No probes involved!! They help with gas and bloating over time. There have been lots of posts on them-do a broad search!

FYI
A probiotic is an organism that contributes to the health and balance of the intestinal tract; also referred to as the "friendly", "beneficial", or "good" bacteria which when ingested acts to maintain a healthy intestinal tract and help fight illness and disease.
This good microflora in your intestine can provide a protective effect only when a proper balance is maintained among all the different bacteria that normally reside in your intestine. If your normal bacteria become depleted or the balance is disturbed, potentially harmful bacteria can overgrow and become established, causing digestive and other health problems. These harmful bacteria are known as pathogenic bacteria, and they have the ability to cause gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea or abdominal pain if not kept in check by the beneficial bacteria.
The most frequently used probiotic genera are Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. The potential mechanisms of their action include competitive bacterial interactions, production of antimicrobial metabolites, mucosal conditioning, and immune modulation. The emerging use of probiotics in several gastrointestinal disorders (eg, inflammatory bowel disease) has led to increased interest in their use in patients with IBS.

WOW -- great info! Could that "pathogenic bacteria" also be the cause of my constant bladder infections? Where do I get this stuff? How much do I take? Why hasn't my doctor told me about it? THANKS, Shawneric, thanks a LOT!!! Bev

You might want to read and look over this site, which may be a sales pitch, but worth reading. I do not know about this product, but when I typed in bladder infections it was the first one and looks interesting, maybe something to ask your doctor about. Don't know about any IBS problems that maybe associated with taking it if any?

Once you "clean out the colon," getting rid of the bad bacteria with the probiotic, it's clean, ain't it? So why would we need to use it long-term? I'm missing something here. Bev

I believe it is to help maintain a healthy digestive tract. So long term use is ok, probiotic not only help the gut flora, but also help the body overall, like allergy sufferers can get relief and also for acne and to build a stronger immune system. It's can be very beneficial for those who suffer from a long term parasite issue, chronic diahhrea sydrome, where they can some relief from the good bacteria. There are many brands and different kinds of probiotics with different levels of live cultures. It's finding one that works for you. Your reg Dr. won't even discuss this because they don't recognize it as beneficial medicine, maybe finding a naturalist would benefit to get some good answers and steer ya in the right direction.
