Are there safe coffee out there or a coffee substitute of some sort?

Thanks.

I drink coffee. I know that it is an IBS trigger, but I need it. If I limit it to one drink and also have soy with it; I am ok. I usually will get an iced (hot - I do not do so well with) grande soy latte from Starbucks. I have never had any problems with this. I feel better when I drink it. I think that also since I am IBS-C that it just helps move things along. I think that I would have more trouble if I had an episode of diahrea. I also drink those international coffee drinks. I don't know that there is anything bad in there for us IBSers. I get vanilla and it is quite good (I can drink that one hot for some reason). Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, there are no safe coffees out there. The reduced acid coffees and decaffeinated ones still cause problems for us IBSers. Here's an interesting scientific paper on the effects of coffee on people with IBS that's at the Teeccino website: Teeccino -- coffee and the colon. So if you're constipated and you drink coffee in order to go, you're just messing your system up more, aggravating those colonic spasms common to IBSers, and it will be harder to get stable.

Anyway, I think Teeccino is wonderful! I drink it and so does my father (who used to be a hardcore coffee drinker). I like the Vanilla Nut flavored Teeccino. It does contain inulin but not enough to cause any GI problems. At least not for me. It's also a good source of potassium, and I think it's common for people with chronic diarrhea to be low on potassium so you get a little boost with Teeccino.

Hey Tatyana, I don't remember if you have issues with soy or not, but I've seen containers of Silk coffee in the dairy section. Not the creamer but coffee. They have Chai, Coffee, Mocha, and Spice:

Thanks, Wendee. I have learned to tolerate soy and I eat it all day now. Thanks.

Wow, I miss coffee too. I've only been doing Heather's diet for a week and a half, but I drastically cut down on my coffee probably about two years ago - when I finally put two and two together that coffee was causing me to have cramps and sometimes D about 75% of the time I had it. I cut back to about ONE coffee a week and I got much better. I continued this way until about two months ago, when even the one a week became too much for me.

I find that there is a HUGE discrepancy between brands and types of coffee, though. Starbucks regular hot coffee is like Ex-Lax to me - I can not tolerate it one bit. However their iced frappacinos, for some reason, were much more tolerable. For regular hot coffee, I found I was able to tolerate Tim Hortons when I only had it once a week (until, like I said, about two months ago). Now I don't drink any.

IBS-A since age 12, and fructose sensitive; with the exception of my pregnancy, have been following Heather's diet since Nov. 19, 2007.
Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!

There are two coffee substitues that I know about, one is called Caffix and the other is Pero. I use Pero, it takes pretty good to me and I loved my coffee. It is made with Rye, Chicory and Barley, both available at HFS...enjoy!
