Painful sexual intercourse - any tips?

I have IBS-C and have had it to varying levels since birth. I have had two laparoscopies to check for endimetriosis and other nasties (one in 99 and one this March) and both came back clear. I have my IBS mainly under control (pass BM a few times a day) but I often still feel like there's a backlog (pardon the expression!). I am still experiencing painful intercourse and would love to know if there's anything else I can do. Have tried new positions to no avail.

Are you sure it's because of your IBS? Have you discussed it with your gyno?

I know you said everything came back clear, but was just wondering what, if anything, the doc said about it still being painful.

Yep, my gyno (now and 5 yrs ago) as well as my GP (who specialises in women's health) think that IBS is the most likely cause. It's driving me nuts. I'm starting to wonder if I need to increase my soluble fibre supplements even more - I'm already taking 2 x 2T Benefiber daily - to see if I can completely clear the bowel, instead of just having it at a workable level of constipation. It may well be something else, but we're all a bit stumped at the moment (and I'm not getting any!!!)

HI- you don't mention your age, but this happened to me and it turned out to be due to early menopause.
The symptoms were alleviated with use of an estrogen cream. You may want to have blood work
done to determine if you could be in menopause-I am only 44 and this happened a couple of years
ago so I was very surprised. The cream does work very well, though. Good luck!

I'm only 25 but I have heard that there are occassional (extremely) early menopauses. Will check that out with my doctor. Thanks for the advice.

I'm not sure if I can give you any advice, but I can tell you I feel the same way...it hurts for me as well and it kind of hurts the "sex" life...but until my stomach/IBS symptoms are good for the day then it hurts all the time for me. It's pretty bad when the good times revolve around your gut huh!

Jo, there have been some posts on this in the past in the Living Room. Maybe something there can help?

I know it's super basic, but have you been tested for thrush? I had this and it made sex SOOOO painful.

Also, do you get nervous (perhaps even subconciously?) about farting, burping or evn pooping when you have sex? The usual reason in non-IBSers for sex hurting is not relaxing enough. Maybe try having a hot bath to relax you and then using lubricant (as water is drying) could help?

Good luck. I know how frustrating this is.

You sound like you are extremely sensitive, this can be caused from the IBS and ovulation. Everything is so close for us in that part of our region, bloating, b/m and uterus all play a factor for intercourse. Try different positions?
Even the time of the day you have intercourse can be a factor. Relaxation is key, meditation or yoga and drink a tea like chamomile. Also there are other herbal supplements you can try for the female repro area to strengthen and it like taking supplemnts for a healthier immune system, but it's for the female area. Raspberry leaf tea, dong qui?, black colosh and even St. John's wart. They all play a part for PMS and so on. Do research and ask your Dr. about these herbs, maybe one can help you.
