Hi everyone, I'm new to posting but I've been reading this message board for quite a while. Reading everyone's comments and questions have helped me on those really ugly IBS days. Plus, I've had a great time trying out some of your recipes and enjoyed them all!
I'm 24 year old vegetarian and live in Los Angeles and work from home, which is helpful with the whole anxiety about having an attack at work (and those days when I do have attacks). Mostly, IBS D attacks, but on occasion, I have IBS C. As a child, I always had constipation problems and with any stress, anxiety, or excitement, I'd have diarrhea. It seems I've had IBS for most of my life. Every day I fight anxiety and panic attacks and emetophobia--so I think my own emotional and psychological problems bring on attacks just as often if not more often than food.
And now, a quick question, does anyone ever pass a bowel movement, but feel like there's more left? Or sometimes, have the urgent need for the bathroom, and then only pass very little excrement?

That is one of my symptoms. Keeps me uncomfortable for hours on some days. My doctor looked at me like I was crazy when I described it to her and the gastro guy she referred me to didn't have anything to say about it either but from what I understand it is a common IBS symptom.

Hi and welcome!
You remind me of myself very much. I'm 27 and I've been having problems with constipation ever since I was a little child. Over the years bloating and pain came along  .
To your Q - yup, same here. I'm like that on most days, actually. I hardly ever feel like I'm completely emptied out. And yes, a lot of times I also feel like I need to go but then nothing comes out. IBS sucks.

Thanks so much for your replies. Sometimes I feel like I'm just crazy. It really helps to hear that others are experiencing the same things. I hate being sick every couple of weeks. My boyfriend is supportive, but at the same time, every time it happens, we're both like I can't believe it's happening again. It doesn't help that I've had problems with borderline eating disorders in the past, so I know he is suspicious that sometimes it's anorexia that is causing my lack of appetite and strange eating. And I have to admit that IBS sometimes is a trigger because I lose weight.

Welcome! Yeah, i'm the same as Zara. Sometimes i worry that i push to much and may cause some harm because i always feel like i need to go if i'm stressed. I've also had an eating disorder in the past which complicates matters as i'm used to food and body being a source of stress. Fun times.

Hi Zara,
I'm kind of new to the board and looking over many posts, it seems like I have a lot of the issues with constipation like you do.....never feeling really empty or not being able to go at all.....when this happens, does your rectum really hurt and it is hard to sit...I went to a GI a few years ago because of constipation issues...he did all tests colonoscopy, CT scan, ultra sound, blood but said it was NOT IBS as I was coming out of the fog of colonoscopy. After that initial visit, he left the practice...things went somewhat smooth for about six months and started with problems again...went to another GI...(he gave me 3 minutes of his time and said I had sluggish bowels and touch of IBS and gave me prescription for lax). Now a year later I'm back at it....When I got constipated before I never had this continue pain in the rectum. I never get stomach pain, only rectum pain. Sometimes I have several small bowel movements during the day but it's been a while since I've felt really empty...I do have an appt with a colon/rectal doc in a couple of weeks...also,,,,,,how do you get through the days without getting crabby...if you are also experiencing this, how do you manage to sleep??? Hi Sharon,
I'm sorry to hear you're in so much pain! I don't know what to tell you because to be honest, I've never experienced the kind of rectal pain you describe. For me it's always my stomach/lower abdomen that hurts, all my pain is "inside" if you know what I mean. My rectum never gets sensitive or painful so it doesn't actually hurt to sit.
If I'm home I use a hot water bottle that I place on my stomach. If I'm away I just take whatever is available - peppermint caps and tea and sometimes Ibuprofen if the pain is bad. I usually don't have problems sleeping since I'm a morning person so usually I pass by 11 on my own
I'm really sorry that I can't help you with your pain. The only thing I can think of is seeing a different doctor (I know, you've probably heard this a million times before). It's not usual to have the kind of pain you describe for an IBS person so I'm thinking it may be something else but I'm not sure what. Definitely tell the doctor about this pain.
I know it's so hard to find a doc that knows about IBS. I just recently ditched mine and next week I have a second appt with a new one. I hope both of us can find someone who can help us!

Thank you for responding......I do have an appointment with a new doc in a couple of weeks...I'm sure you know how difficult it is to get into a specialist....I really hope to find some answers....this is really a difficult time and I'm trying to count my blessings through all of this.....best of luck to you on this journey.

Sharon, I had similar problems- but I am IBS D. When I finally got to the surgeon I had been through 3 colonoscopies with no results. Turned out that I have a smaller than normal colon (at the bottom) and I will tear the walls with each bowel movement. This would keep me from emptying and would feel similiar to having hemorroids. Before I finally succombed to having surgery, I suffered from internal rectal bleeding, anemia, fissures, etc. Something to think about.
Also, if they don't find anything- put them on standby. Tell them you will want an appointment on the same day you experience symptoms. This should be the opportune time for the surgeon to do an examination on you. This was the only way my surgeon found my tear. Those parts heal quickly...
My 2 cents and something to think about for you.
