My new GI doctor prescribed a medicine called Sorbitol to treat my C. When I asked if this was the same thing as the artificial sweetener he said "no" but then I looked it up and I am suspicious that that's exactly what it is! I react pretty bad to candies containing sorbitol so I am hesitant to take this medicine. He said it wouldn't make me bloated but that's exactly what sugar free candies do to me. Anybody has tried this medicine before?

Wow! I didn't know there was a medication that was just sorbitol. SCARY! I'm pretty sure that any of the sugar alcohols cause gas, bloating, cramping, especially in high amounts. I found this info about oral sorbitol, which is used as a laxative for occasional constipation and check out its list of side effects. Anal irritation?! Yikes!

The doctor was warning me against D coming almost inevitably. So far nothing. I took the prescribed dose yesterday and 150% of the prescribed dose today. So far no BM but my bloating is persistent and I've been more gassy. I will wait until tomorrow and then probably stop taking it since I consider it more of a one-time-solution than something that I can take on daily basis.

Yup, didn't really work. Anyway I finally had a BM this morning. It was far from D it it was just perfect. However I can't tell if the bloating went away because I also got my period today so now I have bloating and cramps for a different reason

To sum it up - I would not recommend this medicine. I had to take a bigger dose than the doctor recommended (but he said in advance that I could do that if needed). I had a BM, then nothing for a day, then a really small BM, then nothing again. What I did have was a lot of gas and flatulence. Like I need any more of that, lol!
