Prenatal vitamins and constipation

I am trying to get pregnant and I was told to start taking prenatal vitamins now. Iron really constipates me and prenatals are very high in iron. I will be taking lots of Heather's fiber.

Heather says: "Prenatal vitamins contain a lot of iron, which can make constipation worse. If you are prone to C, talk to your OBGYN or pharmacist and they can give you one either without iron, one with ferrous gluconate instead of ferrous sulfate, or one with a mild stool softener in it to offset constipation."

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I don't know about any particular brand but I would just look at the vitamins/minerals in regular prenatal vitamins and then try to reach a very similar ratio with regular vitamins. It may mean taking more pills at once but at least you get to control the amount of iron or whatever else may bother you.

I agree with Zara's suggestion of looking around for the individual vitamins, or maybe even a multi-vitamin that just doesn't contain iron (some don't).

How would iron affect someone who is IBS-A? We will start trying probably in the spring or summer, after we've bought a house...

Good luck to all who are trying for babies!!

I'm currently TTC, and I spoke with my OBGYN about prenatals months before we started trying. Once she looked at the generic once-daily vitamins I was taking, she said they were fine and had all the necessary "stuff". So, don't assume you NEED to take a prenatal. She didn't want to switch me since the vitamins I'm taking agree with me and my IBS. The only thing I added was a small folic acid supplement, which I didn't really need.

I just buy the Target generic brand of "One a Day Womens formula". they have a small amount of iron, i can't remember how much. But I showed my OBGYN a list of everything in the vitamins, and how much (mg) of each thing, and she said the amounts were perfect. I also know it has 400 micrograms of folic acid, which is the recommended daily amount for pregnant women. Just to be safe, I'm taking an extra 100 micrograms of folic acid every evening (I take the multi-vitamin in the morning). I also take a little extra calcium in the evening.
