Is dairy definitely an IBS trigger for everyone? Even those who have IBS C?

From what I have read on here, it's a trigger for even those that have normal GI tracts.....another thing that scares you off....sorry, IBS attack last night, very tired today...

Is my GI the only one who has IBS patients who have dairy? Is he the only doc who says dairy is okay for some with IBS if you are not lactose intolerant? I don't get him on this one....nor my other doctor who works with IBS folks and agrees that dairy doesn't need to be avoided by people who aren't LI.

My doctor and dietitian say the same. My first dietitian says that intolerance to any food is highly unlikely and then when her diet didn't work she referred me to a food allergy specialist who's now telling me that i have to eat dairy and not wheat. Yet everyone says that dairy's a trigger also. I think health professionals and MDs don't like admitting that certain food groups causes problems for people.

Sorry to hear you had another attack. From what your posts say your attacks sound far too severe to be just IBS. Hope you feel better soon.

I know what you mean. It seems that most of the doctors talk about lactose intolerance and its relevance to diarrhea but nobody ever pointed it out to me as a potential trigger even for non-LI folks.
I personally think that dairy makes me constipated. I can have a little bit without problems (a piece of hard candy with cream, etc.) but I wouldn't dare putting it into my "coffee" or eating a regular yogurt. Which is too bad because I miss it terribly so I just keep telling myself that it isn't really natural to adult people to be digesting another specie's nursing milk.
Anyway, when I spoke with my doc last time I told her about Heather's diet and dairy avoidance and she replied that "it is possible that dairy just doesn't work for some people". So much for a definite answer, huh?

Jordy,

Most of mine all said dairy is ok in moderation, I needed the calcium or told me to take lactaid before consuming dairy. They also have said is causes constipation, which most people I talk to will say, oh good lord if I eat cheese I get constipated.....

I think that it is ridiculous for a doctor to state that "intolerance to any food is highly unlikely..." when dealing with a digestive disorder. Personally, I feel much better when I cut out dairy food.

Especially those with C! It is possible that dairy isn't a true trigger for everyone (possible but improbable IMO) but it is best to avoid it to make it as easy as possible for the GI tract. There is a lot of propaganda out there right now about dairy being good for you- like activia and cheese with active cultures- but this is just not true. Not only the lactose but the protein are good for IBSers to avoid.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
