When I was at my health food store the guy there told me that peppermint tea gets neutralized from the acid in your stomach, therefore it will not do you any good. He said you need to use peppermint capsules with a special coating so they don't start to dissolve until they reach your colon. Is this true? Does the tea not work, or was he just trying to sell me something? I wouldn't mind taking peppermint pills, I just want to know what will work.
Thanks!
Joanne

I do not believe that stomach acid neutralizes peppermint tea. If you have ever known or had acid reflux - they warn you to stay away from mints, esp. peppermint because the reflux is so bad. Therefore - if people who had reflux over produce stomach acid -- and they are warned not to have peppermint the acid must NOT neutralize it, or reflux would not be a problem. I drink peppermint tea, a lot and find that it helps, also i did purchase the Heather's peppermint capsules and those help as well. However I have had the capsules burst on the way down and experienced mild reflux.

I know I can't do the capsules. It's the only time I have reflux. I drink plenty of peppermint tea. But I'm big on tea.

Thanks! I did not think that could be true since so many people say the tea helps them. I'm just starting on the IBS diet, and I need all the help I can get!

You have to take what you are told by health food store owners/employees with a grain of salt. They are usually untrained in dietary matters, the actual (not claimed) benefits of supplements and what is/is not good for IBS.
