Since starting this diet, I have managed to stay pretty stable, much more so than I was before. Of course I still have days that are not too good at all, which in time I know (at least I hope!) will become less frequent as I learn more and more about the diet. But I have noticed that every time I get my period it's as if I am back to square one. It completely messes me up. My bms actually manage to stay fairly normal (thank goodness), but I have extreme cramps and bloating and have the constant feeling like I need to have a bm, like the feeling of never being empty which I experienced so often before starting the diet. And it's not only during my period, it starts before, during and lasts about a week after! And it's worse right after my period then during. I have been in so much pain the last few days it hurts to move or even stand up it looks like I am pregnant lol. It's like I spend the next few weeks trying to get stable again and then there comes my period again and throws everything all off. It's so discouraging:( I have really been trying hard and I have made a lot of changes in my diet. And it's just really depressing to work so hard and constantly have to start over. Is there anyone who has had similar experiences and has found a way to cope, or am I doomed to repeat this endless cycle? Please Help! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there!

It's very common to have problems around the period. I know there are some people here on the boards who take birth control pills without the usual breaks so that they don't get their period at all. Maybe this is something you could look into?

Hello,

I feel for your pain. There is a lot to learn in this diet and to have to keep starting over is frustrating, especially every 28 days! I have lots more problems during my PMS time and during my period. The pains during my period sound exactly like yours-pain, bloating, need to have a bm, etc. I try to be so careful (unbelievably careful) the whole week before my period and not eat any foods that bother me. Same thing during my period; tons of bread, pasta, rice, cereal, and almost no veggies. I use a hot water bottle every night and Heat Wraps everyday (the adhesive kind). If you haven't tried ThermaCare HeatWraps, give them a try. The heat seems to really relax the tummy. I take Motrin/Tylenol throughout the whole period.

I don't know if this is doing any good to help you. I hope so! I wonder if, because all of us with IBS consume so much SF, if our intestine is so full that it gets compressed inside our tummies during period time when "girlie" parts are inflamed and swollen. Before IBS, my tummy was very swollen during period time, and sensitive to the touch. Now it is even worse.

Good luck to you MeiMei

I was like you with the horrible periods. I would end up taking 3-4 darvocet for cramps for the first few days and use the heating pad. Of course my stomach had no idea what to do from nausea to d to c. My doc finally had me try the NuvaRing. I've tried many other BC but they didn't work for me. I keep the ring in continueously so that I don't have my periods anymore. It's totally ok to do this and I feel soooooo much better. You may want to talk to your doc about trying this.

I took my birth control pills continuosly after I discovered how much better I felt when I did not have to have one. Unfortunately I have to stop taking them all together for other medical reasons and cannot take any brth control with any hormones. This eliminates everything that would stop a period. I am dreading having to go through that again, I was the same way, bad for a few days before, awful during and then still bad for a week after. So I would pretty much have 2 awful weeks and 2 good weeks every month. That is no way to live! Any other suggestions besides the normal be careful with the diet suggestions? Any advice would be great. ALso I already use a heating pad almost every night because I feel like it helps prevent some of my problems. Do those patches really help during the day?

I agree with you it is no way to live! It's the exact same way for me. It's like I only get two weeks of every month where I actually feel "normal". It's so frustrating and really just depressing. I always had discomfort, but it has only gotten worse over the years. It's so discouraging to think of years and years of going through this. Wish I knew how to help:(

Thanks for the great advice:) I have tried the heat wraps before but didn't wear them continuously because I didn't feel too much difference. Maybe I just need to be diligent about wearing them for better results. I also try to stick to mostly soluble fiber foods during my period, but will also try to mae sure i start a few days before. Thanks again!

I know exactly what you are going through. I went off the pill to try to get pregnant and it was so horrible that I gave up on children so I could try to have a somewhat normal life. I have a great gynecologist. She found that I had endometriosis and fybroids and that was making everything worse. If you haven't seen your gyne for a while, I would definitely do that. I ended up having a hysterectomy. Now I can tell if I'm sick from IBS and not wonder if it was the IBS or my period, but mostly I feel SOOOOO much better. It was life changing for me.
