Hello, My name is Nicole and I just happened to find this site while doing some research on webmd.com. I am desperate at this point and feel I have no place else to go. My suffering is unbearable and I can't live like this anymore. The pains in my stomach are so bad, at times I feel as though I am going to pass out, and the constant trips the bathrooms are exhausting. I have had every test known to my GI doctor and the bottom line-there is nothing wrong with me except IBS. I have been suffering for over a year now, but was just diagnosed with IBS last week when all my tests ruled everything else out. I don't know where to go from here as my family thinks I am "making myself sick". The only supportive person I have is my husband, but for his sanity, I need to control this somehow. I can't imagine living with IBS for the rest of my life, but I guess now I have to. Is there someone out there that can help me and be my guide to all of this? This site is awesome, and I will be ordering some products, but there is so much information about IBS I don't even know where to start.
Thanks to whoever answers my need for help.

Hello Nicole ... and welcome to the boards. Sorry that you are having such a terrible time right now, but living with ibs can be done. There are many folks on the boards that can certainly help you better than I can and they will answer all your many questions … it's just that I am working graveyards this week and saw your post and had to reply.
Read Heather's books and get on the diet and stay with safe foods. You will feel better and life becomes tolerable and it won't be long until you can get out of the bathroom.
It's great to hear that you husband supports you. Just don't worry about those that do not understand.

Hi Nicole, I'm sorry to hear about your suffering. It's great that you have a husband who supports you! Try to ignore what the rest of your family thinks about you and your eating habits. The only thing that matters is that you get better. I used to eat everything that I was served just so I wouldn't stick out as a picky weirdo but not anymore. I don't care, in the end it's me who is better off and without pain. Start with reading the website and get Heather's books. Maybe your local library carries them. That's where I got mine initially and I'm going to order my own copy now. It took me a long time (couple of years) to finally decide to give this diet a full shot. Before I was struggling, convincing myself that I need to eat dairy, that whole grains and raw veggies should be the base of my diet, etc. Nothing worked but I don't regret it as I did what felt right at that time. Everyone has to find their own way and learn about her body from her own mistakes. What really made a difference for me was quitting coffee and drinking fennel and mint tea. The pain didn't go away but decreased a little. Hang in there. There's no cure for IBS but a lot of people got stable making dietary changes so there's hope for all of us, right?
P.S. Are you a C or a D?

Hi Nicole!
Sorry to hear you're having such a bad time. Do read the info on the Eating for IBS diet and get on it as soon as possible. About other people thinking you're "making yourself sick" of course that isn't true in general. However IBS can cause a lot of anxiety and worrying and IBS is also very sensitive to stress, worrying and anxiety so this means that in some sense you can make yourself sick, although of course not on purpose and it's not as easy as just telling yourself to stop worrying to make the IBS go away. But working with the way you're thinking about all of this does help. Check out the info on hypnotherapy for example.
Hope I didn't confuse you with all that.
Welcome to the boards! Please feel free to ask about anything you want to know.
/Ulrika, IBS-D
