I was wondering about anti-depressant meds...do many of you take them? Which ones seem to work well with IBS pain? Do they make you gain weight? Thanks!

While I am on an aD for other reasons, many find that they help. There is a link between the brain-gut reactions, and the meds help seratonin - which is also found in the stomach. It sorta makes sense. Weight gain depends on the med and the person.

I take cymbalta. My Dr told me that when you're depressed or stressed out it can make pain seem worse, and by balancing out the serotonin & norepinephrine it prevents the body from exaggerating the pain. I've noticed a big difference since using it, mainly it keeps me from stressing, which is a big trigger for me. And it doesn't make me feel like a zombie, the way klonopin did. The cymbalta made me nauseous for the first couple of weeks, so I actually lost weight. If stress is a trigger for you it might be worth looking into. HTH!

I think it really depends per person. I know ppl that take them and i and some others dont take them. It just is what works for you.

I have IBS-A, and took Elavil for awhile because I heard it would help. It did help for a couple of weeks, but after about a month, it started to make me sick and seemed to make my IBS worse. I stopped taking it 2 weeks ago, and my IBS actually improved alittle bit. I suppose AD's vary/ It all depends on the person.

My gyno put me on Prozac for my PMS symptons and also switched me over to NuvaRing instead of an oral BC. Since I started my IBS symptons have really improved as well.
