I was wondering about anti-depressant meds...do many of you take them? Which ones seem to work well with IBS pain? Do they make you gain weight? Thanks!

While I am on an aD for other reasons, many find that they help. There is a link between the brain-gut reactions, and the meds help seratonin - which is also found in the stomach. It sorta makes sense. Weight gain depends on the med and the person.

I take cymbalta. My Dr told me that when you're depressed or stressed out it can make pain seem worse, and by balancing out the serotonin & norepinephrine it prevents the body from exaggerating the pain. I've noticed a big difference since using it, mainly it keeps me from stressing, which is a big trigger for me. And it doesn't make me feel like a zombie, the way klonopin did. The cymbalta made me nauseous for the first couple of weeks, so I actually lost weight. If stress is a trigger for you it might be worth looking into. HTH!

I think it really depends per person. I know ppl that take them and i and some others dont take them. It just is what works for you.

I have IBS-A, and took Elavil for awhile because I heard it would help. It did help for a couple of weeks, but after about a month, it started to make me sick and seemed to make my IBS worse. I stopped taking it 2 weeks ago, and my IBS actually improved alittle bit. I suppose AD's vary/ It all depends on the person.

My gyno put me on Prozac for my PMS symptons and also switched me over to NuvaRing instead of an oral BC. Since I started my IBS symptons have really improved as well.

Elavil (amitriptyline) 10 mg at night, for pain and IBS-D. I've been on other tricyclics before and they never caused any significant weight gain. I recommend starting at a low dose.

Buspar (buspirone) 15 mg, day, for anxiety but also helps with IBS pain. No side effects other than some weird dreams and lightheadedness when I first started taking it.

I started taking a small dose of amitriptyline (Elavil) as an anit-spasmotic when I was dx with IBS. The dose is too small for an anti-depressive effect, according to my MD. I haven't gained any weight, actually I've lost 32 lbs since I began to have symptoms in Nov. 2006.

Celexa......it has worked exceptionally well for me.

I had IBS-A for years....latest bouts lasted 6-9 months at a time. Went on Celexa a month and a half ago and within a week or so the symptoms are gone for the most part. Haven't been this regular in years.

Its a small dose so I have not really noticed any side effects....a little tiredness for a few weeks, but no other problems and I am sleeping better...

When you put it altogether I am pooping, sleeping and eating better than I have in years.....ask your doc....I had to ask mine to try it to see if it would work...she wasn't aware of this...

I have taken Celexa for IBS and it worked great. I am on a very low dosage and it still works. Completely eliminated my symptoms. I had to stop taking it tho as it caused significant weight gain, with no history of being overweight, in a very short period of time that I am now stuggling to lose. I still take it when Im having a bad flare up but thats it. I have IBS-D.
