Hello all,
After tons of tests last fall and raging IBS all last fall,
I had another Epidural Steroid Injection 3/28/07 for back pain.

I had 2 last year before I joined this group and only now do I see the relation between those kind of shots and my IBS raging.
This one was by a new pain doc because the pain management doctor who I saw last summer stopped practicing-or at least stopped drving a 130 miles RT to practice here.

So I tried finding someone else, actually I tried to go to a Neurosurgeon. He refused to see me because of what I call political reasons, and through the back door by word of a friend I learned he wants the referral from my current orthopedist who basically has done nothing new to help me in a long, long time. My PCP got me to the new Pain Management doc.

Within 1½ hours of the injection I was in as much pain as labor pain. Within 36-48 hours the IBS started raging and I could not keep anything but water and gatoraid in my stomach for 8-10 days. Yes I lost weight.

This seems to be followed by increased IBS symptoms until the steroid drugs wear their way out of my system---like months.

So I know how to eat for the IBS, but right now the pain is almost unbearable as that injection was to be the first in a series of 3........and has not helped.

I have sought help from my PCP's nurse practioner today and she says it is an orthopedic problem.........
Don't I have the right to change doctors if the ortho offers no help that does not debilitate me with IBS???

We all can choose whatever docs we want to see and you can change docs anytime but there are rules you have to follow depending on your insurance or if it is a specialist. A specialist will want a referral from your primary doctor. That way they know the basic issues behind your problem have been ruled out. Specialists don't have the time to deal with general issues. They want the details so they can then try to pinpoint the problem. Insurance may not pay for the specialist if you were not refered by your primary doctor or another specialist.

I've been in labor and can't imagine that your pain is the same. I would think that it is worse as it is never ending whether it be your back pain or your IBS. I hope you find someone who is willing to help you.

My primary physician made the referral to change specialists and I got all new MRI's---so I think it was political.
I have a daughter, and my edidural did not work for the labor part, and the pain about a week after the ESI was so bad I went to the ER and they looked for an infection at the injection site with CAT SCan, blood cultures etc...the morpnine did not work for 1½ hours.......I was potassium deficient I had lost so much fluid.
Maybe labor was easier on me than you and the euphoria following labor made my memories go away fast.......and this pain in lasts longer than my 4-5 hours of labor did. Having shoulder surgeries were both worse than labor. Their pain lasted for 4-5 weeks, and after many months all the pain went away. MY back hurts every day sometimes for hours and hours. When the combo of 2 mucsle relaxers and 2 vicodin will not give relief it is horrible. But the IBS is managable compared to all last fall. I think the vicodin helps it.

I totally feel your pain!! I suffered from severe sciatica for several months a few years ago. Some mornings, it would take me half an hour or more (and my DH practically carrying me) to make it from the bed to the toilet. I couldn't put weight on my own feet because the nerve pain was so excruciating. I have a few women say the pain was like giving birth to all of their children at one time! I've never been in labor, but I can honestly say that's the worst pain I've ever been in in my LIFE.

I, too, had several epidurals that didn't last long. I don't remember them exacerbating my IBS though. But I was on so many pain killers, narcotics, steroids, etc. After 2 or 3 epidurals, I finally had surgery. It's not very typical for a 25-year-old to have back surgery, but I'm SO glad I did. The pain was gone when I woke up in the recovery room after surgery. Definitely consider this if it's an option!!
