I posted a few days ago, wanting suggestions of what IBS-Cers take for painful gas and bloating. I posed the same question to my doctor, and she suggested I try Librax. I wouldn't take it regularly, just once in a great while when I'm really in pain. Are there no anti-spasmodic type drugs that have D as a side effect? Have any of you noticed Librax to cause C??

I'm tired of every single thing from allergy meds to ibuprofen giving me C!! Why can't something give me D for pete's sake?? I shouldn't have to choose between gas pain and C.

Lisa - I don't use Librax, but when I did a search for the side effects, constipation was one.
It appears that taking an anti-spasmodic is just going to cause constipation in someone that already has constipation. I haven't found anything yet that will stop the gas & bloating. That is the one thing I haven't been able to control

I've never tried any prescription meds. I have however tried some valerian (herbal for valium) for the cramping. It worked pretty good. I also like to take kava kava, it's an herbal form of muscle relaxer. I usually only take these before bed or if I'm just staying at home because they will make you a little drowsy. I like to take papaya enzymes after a meal to help with digestion and gas. Sorry I don't have info on the meds.

I've used Librax in emergencies. It's worth it. I don't think I was that much constipated after taking it...but I only took it in emergencies when the pain was just too bad.

I don't think any of the antispasmodics will give you D, sadly. They all tend toward C.

I'm not sure if I should say anything, but are you sure it's not the Acacia making you so gassy and bloated?

And no, we shouldn't have to choose.

I've been using Zelnorm for the past year with great results. Any suggestions on what to use next since this medication is pulled? I'm increasing my Acacia from 1 to 2 Tablespoons per day but concerned about my gastrocolic reflux coming to a complete halt as it did before Zelnorm.

No, it's not the acacia. This only happens once in a great while, and it's typically when I'm out with friends. Figures! Could be the stress of eating at a restaurant, or there being something in my food that I didn't know was there... who knows! But the last time it happened, I had to take quite a bit of dicyclomine to make the gas and pain go away, and then I was pretty C the next day. I just thought I might try something new.

I know 2 other people with C who also use Librax, if that means anything!

I thought the gas and bloat were everyday, that's why I suggested the Acacia. Sorry

Yeah, my doctor mentioned that C was listed as a side effect, but said that doesn't necessarily mean it will happen to ME. Well, I'll bet good money that it will. Can't help being a little cynical at this point!

I drink my Yogi Stomach Ease tea every day. Yes, it works great for gas and bloat. But that doesn't help me much if I'm out at a concert with friends and suddenly get a painful attack.

I wouldn't advice Librax for C. I was given it for D and it helped to slow down my bowel motility a bit. I used to take it daily or skip it if I had taken an immodium and was a little c. Sound like it would only slow down your system more, but that's just my experience.

I took Clinidium which was the generic for librax and it was composed of two different meds...one to relax the digestive system (in lamen's terms) and one for anxiety. Perhaps the anxiety component may help you with your IBS but I doubt that your c will improve. Doc seems to be off on this one, based on what everyone else in the thread has responded too. Sorry.

Thanks for the input! My doctor's well aware that C is a side effect of Librax; I think she just didn't know what else to have me try. She didn't prescribe it to help with my C. There aren't too many gas/pain type meds that have D as a side effect. I wish there were! Hopefully if and when I do take it, a small dose will be all I need to stop the attack.

What brand do you drink? And how many cups per day? Is it best to eat before meals as a precaution or after as a "treatment"?

I buy the bottled fennel seeds in the grocery store, but they don't seem to help.

I am IBS-C and was prescribed Librax for the cramping/spasm. I really disliked it, didn't do anything for the cramps and if I took it at night, made my sleep/dreams very strange and not restful. I am now taking Clonazepam to help me sleep (since I get a lot of gas pain at night) and find it highly preferable. But I should add that the Librax didn't make me more C, so if I were you I wouldn't NOT try it on that basis. We're all different; it may help you.
