It looks like you're getting IF with pretty much every meal. Looks good to me!

I saw that you add oat bran to your oatmeal. Is that purely IF? I have a jar of wheat germ here that I have always added to my toddler's cereal in the AM...just for some added nutrients. I am wondering if I should add some to my meals too once in a while when I am feeling a bit c. What do you think and what is the difference between the brans and the germs? lol!

It looks alright but heavy on the SF side. I don't see much protein though. If you're still feeling C, you should increase your IF by adding more veggies.

Oat bran is much easier to tolerate than wheat germ, I find. I have a bread that has oat bran in it, never bothered me. Oatmeal is whole grain oats, so I'm pretty sure it's the same thing as oat bran?

Wheat germ is basically whole wheat, which I find hard to tolerate. Wheat germ includes the outer hull of the wheat grain.

The oatmeal is SF/IF mix, the wheat germ I would treat as IF.

Thanks. I also read a post you replied to about flaxseed. I am sort of looking for something elso to add to my oatmeal or even rice to boost my IF intake and make me "go." I am already eating fruits and veggies but some days I feel more c even if I have had a bm. As you know, I started as a D so I am petrified to try anything too drastic, so what would you do as far as choosing something? the flaxseed? the wheat germ? I can tolerate ww bread in small amounts and whole grain english muffins. I probably wouldn't take this daily, just on c days but I don't want to be in the bathroom all day either...just want to feel more "empty." The raisins have been working but if I take too many, I think it's giving me gas/bloating. Thanks for your advice.

Start with a low dose if you try the flax, and continue to drink plenty of water.

I would try the flax. I definetly tolerate it more than raisins. The oatmeal I buy has flax in it, and overall I think it's not much. If you're adding it yourself start with just a little bit, maybe a tsp.

What kind of texture do these flax seeds have? Are they big and crunchy or not too bad? Could I maybe grind them up or something? I'm looking for some IF to add to my cream of rice, but don't want to add anything really hard or crunchy...

I didn't notice the flax seeds much in my oatmeal, but I tend to eat my oatmeal pretty dry and not too creamy, so it may have blended in better. They're small seeds even when whole though so it's not too crunchy. You can try buying flax that is already ground up, it's not as 'seedy'.

Thanks!! I will try that. Are they refrigerated, or just in the dry bulk section? How much should I start with? I tend to be fairly sensitive to nuts; I used to put ground almonds in my cream of rice, but THAT gave me gas. Perhaps I should take GasStop with the flax seeds, just in case? Maybe if I start small enough and work up, it won't bother me...

Either get the flaxmeal (already ground up flax) or if you buy the whole seed, you have to grind it up yourself in a coffee bean grinder or something.

Mine is very fine, like a powder substance. I don't think I could do anything coarser.

I put 1 T on my cream of rice cereal, along with the fruit. I've also worked up to 1 T at dinner time. I think I started with 2 tsp. Honestly, I don't know if it is hurting or helping me because I've never been stable.

Good luck. Let us know how you do on it. It's supose to be very "healing" for IBS, according to some sources.

I'm stopping by the HFS on my way home, so I will look for the flaxmeal. Thanks!

lists it as 2 grams SF and 1 gram IF...I think. It is almost powder consistant and has lower fat amount than others I have seen. I wish I could remember the name of it to give to you.

Thanks. I saw some flaxmeal in the HFS today but hadn't read these posts yet so I didn't buy it. It was a huge bag and I was wishing they had something smaller in case it didn't agree with me. I'll give it a try though. K2...what brand/version of oatmeal do you eat that has flax already in it?

Hi,

I add acacia to my oatmeal, would I add flax to it too? I feel like I have reached a wall and am looking for ways to kick my C in the bud. Thanks!

Nature's Path Flax n' Oats

I get the Apple & Cinnamon all the time and eat it most days (I'm IBS-D) but on more stable/C days I have the flax n' oats for some extra IF (and Omega 3s)

I bought some flax seed meal at the HFS yesterday, and added 1 tsp to my cream of rice this morning. I'm going to very slowly work my way up. How much do you use every day?

I've been taking it for over a year or so. I take 2 full Tablespoons now. I started at one tsp, like you. You can increase the flax much faster than the SFS, in my experience.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

The 1 tsp didn't seem to bother me yesterday, so perhaps I will try 2 tsp today. I just got over a pretty bad "broccoli attack"; it's gonna be a long time before I eat that again! I had some with dinner Saturday and lunch leftovers Sunday. Ended up with D Sunday afternoon, all of Monday, and Tuesday morning!! Yikes! I think it has finally passed...

I should have specified that I split the 2 T up. I don't take it all at once. I put one T in my cream of rice and 1T in water before or after dinner. Sometimes I may sprinkle it over my dinner too, depending on my mood.
