I have a soya allergy (and it is also one of my IBS triggers, strangely enough) and I've noticed in Heather's book "Eating for IBS" a number of recipies call for Mori-Nu Silken Lite tofu. Does anyone know of a non-soya subsitute I can use in place of this (and other tofu products).
I can easily replace the soya cheeses and milk with other alternatives that work for me, but I'm at a loss on what to do about tofu and the local health food stores haven't been able to help much.
Thanks!
Teri

Well, after perusing the internet and asking a lot of questions elsewhere, I found the only information I could get was on seitan, which is a gluten substitute for tofu.
Since it's made from wheat, I have my suspicians this might not be a good thing, but what they hey, I'll give it a try and hope for the best. It might now work as a substitute for soft tofu, but I may just have to skip trying out the recipes that have that ingredient in it.
I'll keep at the research and see if there's anything else I can find.

I think it would depend on the recipe. If the tofu is used as a meat substitute, you could probably use chicken or fish depending on the recipe. In the dessert recipes, I really don't know.

Hello,
Seitan is actually a great substitute for tofu in dishes that call for it as a meat substitute - as long as you are okay with wheat gluten. Seitan is very very high in protein. Debbie IBS-C P.S. As far as a substitute for soft tofu in deserts and things - that is pretty hard to substitute Have you tried using beano when eating soy? Make sure to take enough and with your first bites.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.
Unfortunately Beano might only work somewhat with the digestive upset tofu can cause me. While I can tolerate fermented soya products in very small amounts once in a while, having too much soya makes me break out with hives and with eczema (aside from the digestive issues). It's not a severe allergy (no anapylaxis), but it's a very uncomfortable one.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to figure out how to deal with the dessert elements where the lite tofu is listed as an ingredient. If it's a small amount of soya (especially fermented), it's not as big a problem but too much makes me break out in hives and eczema which isn't very comfortable.
