"Scallions and green onions generally refer to exactly the same vegetable. They're also sometimes called spring onions, Chinese onions, and in Australia (confusingly enough), shallots or eschallots. " I'm not in australia, but its the same thing, right?

Actually, shallots as we know them in the states are a different vegetable... hence the "confusingly enough" thrown in there (meaning that Australians refer to them as something they aren't). Not the same thing as scallions, nope.

shallots look more like garlic cloves, and are sort of a cross between onion and garlic.

i'm making italian tuna, lemon, and basil pasta salad from heathers book pg 138, should i use shallots or go without? grocery store only has shallots.

Green onions/scallions are long green onions with a white bit (they look like mini leeks) Shallots are small onions the size of large garlic cloves but with a coppery cover. Definitley not the same thing...but all part of the onion family...
