im hearing that a specific strain of bacteria that is overgrown in the GI can cause IBS - whas the deal with this?

No one knows EXACTLY what causes IBS. Personally, I think that there are many different things that can cause IBS and this may well be one of them.

Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) may play a role in the symptoms for some IBS suffers. At the moment there isn't strong evidence to show SIBO plays a significant role in most IBS.
There is a description of SIBO on this NIH web page and a write-up in the research library.

My doctor mentioned this concept and has said that in his patients that don't see any results with a combo of diet changes, medications and exercise, he has tried courses of antibiotics and seen improvement.
