I believe the emphasis on eating white bread is on fresh heartier white bread. They always reccomend sourdough and french bread. Due to it's considerably shorter shelf life it lacks some of the additives and preservatives that shelf bought white bread has. That being said, I do eat white hamburger and hot dog buns every once in a while. I think making them the base of your bread consumption probably would'nt be the best.

A lot of the packaged sandwich and bun breads are made with bleached flour and HFCS. Both can be bad for IBS. For myself, HFCS is a sure problem causer. Fresh baked white breads (french and sourdough, etc.) are just easier to digest. That being said, I can handle other white breads as long as they don't have the bleached flour or HFCS. You just have to see what works for your body. Oh, and some of the other breads have dairy in them. So watch out for that, too.

I do just fine with "light" white breads. Village Hearth is the brand I buy most often, but I think it's a regional brand.
