Hey guys, i've been going to a school type situation maybe once a week or so, maybe once every few weeks sometimes... Im trying to do adult education due to missing highschool (secretly, alot of the reason I would skip, which lead to me being kicked out, is my IBS-D, which would be horrible for school)

So now, The adult education is starting to kick up even more, where as a group of us will be doing group classes together, weekly 5 days a week.

The cost of me going for the one time a day can be up to $20, as I buy a 20 pack of immodium and use up to 10-15 per day... I just get so nervous and keep feeling the IBS-D and just need to take the pills (up to 2 years of Immodium usage, starting with just 2-3, 4-5, kept going till a day in school used 8-10 and a half day used 5-8...

Now a few hours a day can take 10-15, this isn't a good situation both costly and healthy, but my dependence and tolerance pretty much leave this as the only option.

(I'm 19 years old, living with my parents, my mother buys the immodium for me, yet usually makes note that its probably bad, I once asked the doctor and the doctor said "It should be fine.")

This situation could go for 5 days a week, 2-6 months, maybe more, depending on how long it takes me to get equivilence to highschool done.

I'm really worried about this and Its a crucial time for me, I want to move foreword in life but im stuck in sort of a rut. If anyone can help me with suggestions on how I can tame my IBS-D (which I would rank high-to-severe) I would HIGHLY apperciate it.

The less immodium I take, the worse it seems to be...

The big question is: what type of diet do you have? Sounds like you need to cut WAY back on the IF and really increase your SF. I would also suggest talking to your doctor about an anti-anxiety medication, since your IBS-D is very obviously connected to anxiety.

I used to be addicted to Immodium as well and have slowly weaned myself off of it. I take it now when I am uneasy or have something really important. I used to be IBS-D primarily but now I am an A so I have to be careful. One suggestion that I would make is to buy the generic Equate form of Immodium, it is called Loperamide. I always did and it saved me a ton of money. I could buy it at Sam's Club in a huge box but Walmart sells it too. I asked a GI specialist about long term use of Imodium and Simethicone because I would take alot of both. He told me that it would not harm me physically and if it meant that I could leave the house that it was okay. But, he did state that it would be healthier if I managed my anxiety better so that I could cut down and not be so dependant on it. That is where I am today!

Then definitely give the anti-anxiety meds a shot. You might be surprised at how much it will help. LOTS of people on this site (myself included) have had great success managing IBS with either anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medications. In your case, your anxiety is truly exacerbating your problems and you need to get it under control!

You gave up diet coke? Well, that's great, but have you also given up all the other trigger foods like dairy, red meat, caffeine, anything carbonated, egg yolks, etc.?? You still haven't commented on what kind of diet you are following.

I'm not really on a strict diet, I pretty much eat whats good and convenient, right now I haven't given up anything besides any caffinated\carbonated beverages...

My next goal is chocolate milk, im going to limit my liquid intake to strictly water.

Then my advice to you is to STRICTLY follow Heather's diet and give up the things she labels as triggers. That's the whole point of this message board!

I agree. This is a lot to comprehend, but read as much as you can about the diet and start RIGHT NOW!! You will be amazed at how much better you feel even at first. I just started taking an anti-anxiety med and I teetered back and forth over whether I should, but it sounds like your anxiety is really taking over. I used to be that way before finding the diet. Although never as much immodium as you are taking. You want to get yourself to a point where you can control your ibs with food and maybe the anixety meds on a daily basis and then save the immodium for rough days or big events. You'll have to decrease slowly, but as you increase your SF, you'll be able to take less immodium. Of course make sure you see a GI to rule out any other digestive problems (I have microscopic colitis AND IBS but the diet and Acacia help both). Hang in there. You're in a good place and on your way by finding this site.

I have been where you have been. I know what it feels like. However, I do not know for sure what your stomach can tolerate or not. Personally, I cannot eat anything containing wheat, sugar, gluten, yeast, or dairy. I follow some of what Heather has, in addition to info from two other sources (the Yeast Connection and the Candida Cookbook). I recommend as the others have: try not to rely on the laxatives because they can become habit forming, as well as can eventually stop working because your system becomes used to them. Also, try the diets. A good book is the IBS cookbook. If you find that your stomach is still having issues you can try other sources out there.

I can tell you first hand that zelnorm works for some, but not for me. The doctor also had me on 3 different types of anti-depressants to help with my issues. All I have to say from that is that they made me worse, and have obliterated my trust in doctors.

Also, I cannot remember if Heather's books cover this or not, but be sure to try taking vitamin supplements, as well as a pro-biotic. I take a multi-vitamin, 1500 mg of VitC, and acidophilus daily.

The only times that I fall out of remission is when I eat EXACTLY what I am not supposed to eat.

I wish you well, and hope you start to feel better!
