I have adapted an IBS lifestyle for many years but was missing the diet piece until finding Heather's site. I suffer from chronic constipation variety and pain, bloating. I discovered now that I have been eating exactly opposite for years with very little, to no, soluable fiber and lots of insoluable fiber, raw veges, and fats galore (per doctors orders - yikes). I have stopped all of this now and gone strictly on Heather's diet. I started less than one week ago with the dietary changes and notice less pain already but greater constipation. I continue to take my magnesium supplements now which have always helped me tremendously but can cause pain and bloating also . I have started the fennel tea and mint tea and soluable fiber foods about 4-5 days ago. Most of my gut pain is gone but I have extreme bloating and fullness almost constantly and yet feel very hungry all the time now also which was never the case before. My magnesium is not working as well either. I took my first 1/2 teaspoon of Acacia fiber and blew up like a balloon and was so uncomfortable it scared me. Rice is causing a similar reaction. I don't want to quit so soon but I realize i need to adjust something. I feel I may have made too many changes too quickly??? The drastic change in diet AND the Acacia??? What is considered a "reasonable" amount of say white rice for example to eat when someone is starting out with this diet. Has anyone else experienced this reaction from the Acacia and what do I do about it??? Would it be better to just take the Acacia and not so much soluable fiber foods or better to eat the soluable foods for a while and then start the Acacia??? Please help. With gratitude...........

Hi there!

I too, had the same initial reaction to acacia. What worked for me was starting at a much smaller dose - 1/8 teaspoon twice per day. Stay at that dose for a week, then spend a week increasing by 1/8 teaspoon. Stay at that dose for a week, etc., etc. Just go very slowly and you won't get all that bloating and rumbling!!

As for magnesium, I would suggest you try Natural Calm instead. It's a magnesium citrate supplement. Do a search on it, and lots of posts will come up. Lots of us use it for C; it works wonders and it's safe to use daily! Try taking 2 teaspoons before bed (mixed in hot water, like tea) and if that dose doesn't work, add 1/2-1 teaspoon. You should see a difference in just a few days. It's been my "miracle cure" for my C!! I take about 2-2.5 teaspoons daily.

Make sure that you are getting enough IF; too much SF will definitely make you feel full and bloated. Try eating smaller meals, maybe just 1-1.5 cups of food at a time. I eat about every three hours throughout the day, but I eat very small portions.

Give that a shot. Hang in there, and I hope you start feeling better!!
